I'm in the wrong business OT

my brother just showed me the quote he got to do JUST THE REAR brakes in a honda CRV (this is at the dealer)...

replacing pads and rotors...

... I feel like doing a contest to see if anybody can guess... but I won't.

$1800!!!!

It'd be funny except that you KNOW there ARE people out there who would atually pay it.

I got a quote for $900 dollars (4 hours of labor) to change the coils, wires and sparkplugs on my Buick. $250 in parts (same AC delco they were going to use) and 45 mins and I had it done. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way.

Couple things... how about calling a parts store (like NAPA) and get parts prices? And how about letting an independent shop do the work (a reputable one). Another thing in some cases you can only get parts from the original maker. And some charge exorbitant prices. They don't advertise that when you buy their car.

With many of the Honda's the rotor and hub assembly are one piece. If the rotors are bad you have too replace the whole assembly, very spendy with OEM parts. There is a company that makes a tool that turns the rotors on the car, have your brother check with some brake shops.

only union workers and JD lovers

Couldn't resist....

Just for S&G's, look up the parts at rock auto.....

Just did the brakes all the way around on Honda CRV 03. Had all the rotars turned and new pads for around $50. Was not a hard job at all.

You need to advertise this all over a local paper to get the truth out that this dealer is scamming people.
That is so fooked up that the Better business bureau might yank his chain.

I just changed the rear brakes on my 98 Gmc 2500 HD yesterday.
New drums,shoes and hub seals,..$290.47.

Bro got a quote from the stealer to replace a leaking rear axle seal on his wife's jeep.
$ 1200. :roll:
I said, bring it here.

Its almost as if they want you up against a wall, can't afford the repairs, we can finance a new one for ya, and take away your problems!

At some certain point at so many miles, but not high mileage yet, also depending on driving habits, (I go easy on mine) brake job and other things need to be done, then they price it so its a burden, that number is as far out as I can ever recall seeing, most brake jobs I've done myself to avoid haggling.

Buddy of mine took his company truck to the shop the other day for two tires and a set of brakes. He didn't give the name of the shop but it wasn't a dealership. Anyway, total on the bill came out to just under $1600. Granted the two tires alone probably accounted for half of that, but even at that, $800 to install two tires and one set of brakes just ain't right. But they paid it......

I think most bussines people today are in a rip off mode.Money is tight and they try to gouge
everyone they can.A friend was told by a ford dealer the engine was bad in his truck when it quit running and it would cost 5000 to fix it.A local gargage fixed it fot 150 bucks, said a sensor was bad.

there is certainly business's and people running shops that are over charging for some services ,but just like running a household there are expenses involved with doing so , add up what it costs to own a home and run a household and then imagine what the cost is to operate a shop or a business also , and that is what you are paying for when you have something done. Its not the 60's, 70's or 80's any more, the days of cheap services are gone!

Just did a brake job- all four- on my K2500 Chevy. Parts- pads and rotors- were over $500 at jobbers cost because I can get them on the local Fire Department account. Add a dose of aggrivation and you might have that much of a bill....

I decided to purchase Ford Merkon V for my trans change. It was over 8.00 a qt a couple days ago. I go to the ford dealer to see if I can get a better price. He said it was 6.95 qt. I said a couple days ago it was over 8.00. The parts guy said that is what we charge the service dept. So when the dealer services a trans. they charge over 1.00 a qt more, to the customer. That isn't right. Stan

Yea, I found that out too. I'm thinking next time I'll ask what parts they need and I'll walk over and get them from parts and hand them to the service guys. :)

1st) It is a Honda and the quot is from a Honda dealer. They will use all OEM parts. 2nd) The parts for many of these are sky high and you have to go to Honda for them if it is new enough.

Buddy has one of these. He is a good mechanic. The rear caliper locked up and ruined the rotor. The caliper was not available yet after market. The caliper, rotor and hub. (all one assembly)The parts alone where over $1200 for the one wheel. The rotor/hub had the sensors in it for all of the anti lock brakes and traction control.

He is not bragging as much any more about how great a deal that little import is. LOL

23 year old daughter just had the recommended 60,000 mile maintenance done on her Hyundai... new timing belt and water pump. Over $500.

oh - and $70 to replace the cabin air filter...

... which I've already done for him. It was under 20 for the filter and took about 32 seconds to replace.

$45 to do the engine air filter!

I get that they have to make a living.

And my brother lives in the czech replublic, only comes home every now and then, so I get why he likes to give the dealer the business - they've got the knowledge and right parts for that vehicle, and it's usually done right the first time...

But at some point it just gets insulting.

If you're going to do $5000 worth of work on somebody's car - throw a (#*&$# air filter in for free.
You'll lose about $10, and the customer will walk away feeling a lot better about your operation.

JR - what dealer? I was going to look at a CRV in Lincoln RI this weekend for the Mrs. If its the same dealer i may have to 2nd guess...sounds like he's not very honest.

Not necessarily a recent thing- When I worked for PCA, we bought fleets of cars about every 3 years. Bunch of Plymouths in '74, everybody hated 'em, so Fords in '77. Boss said instead of the independent repair outfit, we'll get them serviced at Ford. Mine was the first to go in for an oil change, and replace a busted headlight. $112! (remember, this was 35 years ago). Boss hit the roof, and told everyone to go back to the independent guy (who was charging 20 bucks for an oil change, IIRC).

I won't even talk about our choice in 1980- Chevrolet Citations! Need I say more?
