I am new to the farming thing. I have 3 acres that I am going to plant corn next spring. Am having the coop soil test and determine what I need. It was alfalfa for 10 years so I don"t think I will need nitrogen, but will need p@k. At current prices what am I expecting to pay an acre? Thanks for any info!!

Depending on what kind of a yeild you want you will still need N Your seed dealer will help you with all the stuff you want to do.

Yes you will need N. Even if you don't put any on at planting it is still recommended to side dress afterwards.

Good 3-5 year old alfalfa will provide enough N. 10 year old is pretty thin, might not be enough N.

Put on 50 lbs of P & 50 lbs of K/ acre and you'll be close. I'd maybe put on 50# of N as well.

Alfalfa takes out a lot of P & K, so maybe you'll need a bit more if you want optimal.

Cost - well $200 - 250/ acre should cover it maybe.

Here what I applied last spring 150 lbs/acre of 19-19-19 along with 150lbs. of pellitized lime per acre so that end up about $62 dollar an acre of fertilizer. Fertilizer prices are volatile so it depends on the time of year you purchase and oil prices. I buy non round up ready corn only paid about $25 per acre for that. Herbicide will be the only cost that you will need to consider, if you have your spray license you can buy restricted use sprays if not you'll need to go with round up ready corn and spray round up.

Don't guess get that soil test. For 50# of 34-0-0 and 9-28-30 I pay about $14 a bag. The test should tell you how much per acre you should apply.

Depend on your soil test... We'd not think of putting corn in without at least 50 # on N.... a pile of manure, probably plowing down alfalfa as well... On the other side, we never add any K as our tests are already high. Usually something like 200# of 25-25-0 to start then mabey 75# of AN later on depending on how much manure it got...
