brushog vs. hp

5!ft on an N because that is about as narrow as a bushs are built. With 23HP and the fast 1st gear there are many places 1/2 width would be lots.

Approximately 5 PTO HP/ft. Of course this general rule depends upon conditions.

I run a 5 ft Bushhog with a NH TC-29. It has 29 engine HP, not sure of the PTO HP. Will mow anything I can drive over.
30 HP engine or PTO would be plenty to run a 5 footer.

Used to use a 5' JD pull type behind a Farmall 300 and worked ok till 12foot tall stuff then it was a half swath.

Pulled a 5 ft with a Ferguson TO-30. Has about 24-25 tested draw-bar horses. If it got too thick, decrease the swath to less than a full one. Only drawback was it had a regular exhaust and muffler, no vertical stack. Started a couple fires and I retired it from brush hogging for that reason. Will change that to a stack whenever I get around. Using a Ford 3000 also a gasser right now.
Hope this helps, Ralph in OK

Yeah, I am currently running it with an 8n, seems at times to be a little much for it at times especially going through bull rush and 8 ft. tall canary grass. I've kinda been thinking about trading up to a newer 4X4 w/ loader. So, just trying to see what everyone else thinks. Thank you all for helping out

I've come accross a site that is pretty informative when investigating different brands of tractors. I wish I knew how to put a link to the site here but all I can do right now is tell you the name which is, "external_link".I have used it many times looking on cl and all the info the seller gives is the model and brand. This way I can usually find the hp and year or years they were made. Check it out!

IF you had "Live PTO", 25 to 30 HP would be fine.

As it is, you either must cut a narrower swath or raise it up and cut it all twice..

Sharp knives make a huge difference in power requirements..

I've run a 5 footer for years on a Farmall Super C and have never had any problems or had to decrease cut size, even when cutting ropy swamp grass.
Bottom line--use sharp blades.

I personaly wouldnt want anything much less than 25hp,and often thats not enough.any real tough brushogging with my n's and i hook onto a four foot. ive got a 4-5 and 6,and consider about 5 hp per foot about the very minimum. good sharp blades help mowing grass, and mounting one correctly is the main thing.

yeah, I do keep my blades sharp, easier to reach underneath the mower deck after mowing with a good file than to pull em out, specially when I don't have the right tools to remove the blades. Yet anyway!
