Louisiana Crops (Warning lots of pictures)

Some pictures from around Louisiana. Sure hope I get all these pictures in the correct order.

The corn is drying down and looks good.

Some of the fields have already been harvested.

While it is hard to see this is beans. They are also looking good.

Fields of baled hay.

Even though this area gets over 50 inches of rain a year some even have a back up plan in place because July August and Sept are our driest months.

Milo I think some of you may call this Grain Sorghum.

This is rice. Most rotate these fields with crawfish. The rice subsidies have killed this crop because you can get it and never grow rice. I know one home owner that was getting a rice subside and has never grown rice or even owned a tractor.

And a field of harvested rice.

I want to say this is beans but as green as it is and knowing the location this may be young cotton.

This is sugar cane. You get a 3 cutting every 4 years. That is the reason for the fallow field in the foreground. While this is a very labor intensive crop I think the hardest part is getting a allocation to sell your crop.

I hope you enjoyed pictures from around our southern state.

John in La, can you get me more info on the rice subsidie? Send it to me in west central Illinois. No, I don't farm, have never grown rice, but I DO have a tractor and could use some extra income. LOL

Nice pictures by the way.

Isn't it interesting how farmers/Ranchers can make things work our no matter what the world throws at us. We were Wheat Farmer, and only Wheat could be growen on our farm. BUT then we planted dry land corn, Soy beans, Milo, etec etec. and we made it through the tuff times. I say we need a FARMER in the white house. Oh yes he will have to have one of each color of tractor. Ha Ha. Buy the way we would even pop the milo for a snack.

Looks a lot better than up here. A lot of corn was chopped in July yields from inspections are any where from 1/2 to 25 bu. Was this area flooded a ear or 2 ago?

As far as I know none of this area was flooded. While these pictures are from all over the state all this area is inside the levee protected area.

The only areas that were flooded (that I know about or can remember) last year when the river was so high are areas that were inside the morganza spillway and were flooded on purpose.

Unlike the north we have spillways we can open to prevent topping of the levees. The corp has a set of rules to follow. Once x gallons are flowing down the river the spillway is opened to keep the river flow at no more than x gallons that is measured in cu ft per second. With the flood of last year the spillway was opened at 20% and after a flow rate was estimated some of the gates had to be closed to keep the river at the right flow.

ok thank you for the info. I seen pics of the flooding on the news. It was before the mighty Mo went on a rampage up here.
