Farmall H not shifting into 1st gear.

I have great trouble shifting into 1st gear from neutral only when the engine is running. Can anyone suggest what I could do.

You need to explain things a tad bit better here. So what does it do or not do grind or what?? Hard to help you help your self with out good info to work with. If it grinds maybe a simple clutch adjustment problem or low transmission oil level or your trying to put it in gear to fast them gears spin for a bit after the clutch is pushed down

I agree with Old. If the clutch is depressed for 15 seconds, it should then go in gear. All gears should respond the same way as 1st however. There are no syncronizers like in a manual trans car, and as Old points out the only thing slowing down the gears is the trans lube. Jim

You clutch sounds like it needs to be adjusted. The pedal should have 3/4" free play. that means it travels freely until resistance is felt. This is actaully the gap between the throw out bearing and the clutch fingers. Once the bearing touches the fingers that's when the resistance is felt on the pedal. Hope this makes sense. Adjust the freeplay by adjusting the long rod connected to the clutch pedal. Let us know what you find.

Just sitting there with the motor running and the trans in neutral, I can push the clutch all the way in and try to shift into 1st gear but it will go in but very hard with no grinding. I can shift into any other gear with no problems.

I would check you transmission fluid and make sure you do not have a lot of water in it causing the area that 1st gear runs in to be rusty. Seen that on more then one tractor and funny how sometime you can shift all but one or 2 gears because of rust and being a gear that is used very little

Thanks for the info. Its been inside ever since I restored it so I know that there is no water in the transmission but you're indicating a bur or something that prohibits shifting into 1st gear. Thanks again. Al

Unles it is in a climate control building, being inside does not guarantee no water in transmission. It forms as condensation from temperature changes. I learned that the hard way.

Stored inside and no water is wrong. Common the have water in them from condensation from the building heating and cooling. So I would still check to make sure it has no water in it. Easy to do by slowing unscrewing the drain plug just to the point it drops and I almost bet it drops some water. Of course if you just ran it 5 minutes before it would not but then you would also have fluid that looked like a milk shake

Mr. OLD I think you're pretty smart but not old. After my birthday today I will pull the plug and see if there is a milkshake in there not even a drip of H20. I'm not old either just 69. Thanks. Al

Yep I am young then you but then the handle does not tell the whole story as to why I use it. LOL Came from 2 places one where I learned what I know and 2 from a pony we had that was named Old-Coal
