Hey folks,
B&C on my saw are shot and I need to replace them. Will give the local dealer my business for one set because they've been good to me, but they are very expensive compared to what I can order thru ebay or amazon in the States.

Anyway, different info shows up for the same saws... Is it just that the B&C need to match, or does it have to be the B, C, and sprocket? May be able to get the info off the stihl site, but thought I'd ask here in the meantime...
Stihl site recommends an 18" B&C, bought the saw new with 16". Should I go 18 like the site says? Kinda overkill I think but OTH it's only 2 inches and I have my 14" top handle hitachi now. 2 inches ain't gonna be a backbreaker is it???

Thanks, Dave

hi, i run 3 stihl saws. one 18,one20,and one25. all have the same size chain, but one saw had to change the sprocket to match the chain. you can also get different number of teeth sprockets, for different chain speeds. also, a 2 inch longer bar is good if you fall alot of timber.

I would stick with the 16" bar. What size saw is it? My 55-60cc saws all have 16" bars on them, as I prefer over-sized engine to bar, as apposed to under-sized engine to bar.

Does the have a spur or rim on it? Might want to replace the rim. If you are going from a .325 to a 3/8 chain, you will need to replace the rim. The bar and chain need to match the gauge correctly either: .050, .058 or .063. Yours is probably .050 or .063.

You don't need to buy a Stihl B&C either. Oregon B&C's work fine as well.

The bar and the chain need to match.

Bought all of our Stihls from one dealership because of good service.

Occasionally buy chains from another dealership because of convenience.

Took the empty chain package to the "convenient" dealer and bought 3 chains.

Discovered later that the chain was too wide and would not fit in the channel on the bar.

Took the bar back to the "convenient" dealer and exchanged chains; made sure each chain would fit the bar.

Fellow working there was a former employee of the "good service" dealership.

He said "good service" dealership stocked different type of chains and bars for their Stihls.

for my little MS-180, I buy from Baileys online

their Woodsman Pro chain has about 2x the cutters that the Stihl OEM "green" chain has

was throwing chains with OEM so I went with rim sprocket but think I had to change the clutch housing, just get all the parts to match pitch...

I am at work right now... Any way of knowing (online source maybe) what original is? Prolly just have to get the info tonight and order tomorrow...

go to www.baileysonline.com. They have a bar
finder that should show you the oregon number. Then
you could take that number to ebay.-Morgan

I replaced the sthil bar with a oregon, kept using the same chains. I change chains often, sharpen the dull ones, rather have a bunch of chains than run the snot outta the saw with a dull chain.

OK.... Brought both saws to work, took em apart as much as possible and washed them all up purty... Cleanin lady's gonna be hot tomorrow

Got all the info off the stihl and it must be popular... Amazon, bailey's, and a couple other places are out of stock on combos.. Single components make it about as expensive as here... Guess I'll just buy local... Only need a chain for the hitachi and they ain't too expensive.

Thanks.
