I took a ride early this morning.Usually I put a small cooler in the truck with a couple bottles of water but today I forgot.Sooo I stop in a small town at a convenience store. As I'm walking up to the door a guy comes out looks at me ,shakes his head and mumbles something. I said excuse me and he says you'll see.
I go in, go to the cooler get a big bottle of water and head to the counter.Behind the counter is a gal probley 18-19 texting on a cell phone.I put the bottle on the counter and get my wallet out.She looks at me and says the light thingy on the cash register is broke so she can't sell anything because she won't know how much change to give me back. This is what we got to look forward to.

Yes were turning out dummer students every year , but thats the way they want our next generation so thay won t question any changes.
They will go along with anything that they are told.
I really think it started with the modern math. Its a crime that the kids have to have a computer to make change. What evre happened to the writeing , Reading & Arithmetic taught to our generation .

Some years ago my wife was Cafeteria manager at out local elementary school. One day a class was being quite rowdy in the cafeteria so wife asked the teacher if she could say something to them to quiet them down. Teacher replied, "I'm on my lunch break".

The more we spend on education the dumber our students get, to get where I'm going with this. Mathematically
if we reduce school spending our child's learning should go up. Yet we continue to to the same thing over and
over again which is spend more money on public schools. I have moved around quit a bit in my adult life,
seems anywhere we had decent schools for my girls we also had parochial schools in the community. The village
we lived in when we first moved to Wisconsin was less than 2000 people. Their schools were always in the top
10% of state, I think it's because there were two parochial schools in that community, so much for the theory
that private schools hurt the public schools by pulling the "good" students away. Being one of those right
wing fanatics I sent my daughters to a parochial school. The school they attended had a per studnet budget of
about 1/2 of the local public schools yet the school always out scored the public school in the state
standardized tests. This is where I usually go in to a rant about public teacher's unions, I'm not going to
do that today. I had an opportunity to get a teaching certificate with my AG degree. It took 180 credits for
me to get my AG B.S., would of taken more than 90 additional credits to get the teaching certificate. I
sometimes wonder if the problems we have are related because our teachers are taught more process (how to
teach) that sustenance (what they're teaching). I feel the same about a lot of businesses, that the MBA
running the show understands business but doesn't understand the product they are producing.

To fix schools- 1-implement a voucher system allowing lower and middle class families to take their children
out of a failing school and enroll them in alternatives. 2- change the requirements for teaching credentials
so any one with a B.S or B.A. in a subject and an associate's degree in education can teach, placing the
emphasis on the math, science or history that is being taught.

well you won't like this either, but school books are being replaced with games that are supposed to teach and they are played on government (federal and local) funded ipads or tablets - I cannot keep up with the technology.

One of the problems in this country is many kids have no incentives to achieve. Most have had it too good unlike kids in other countries that are hungry for an education. They also know that the govenrment will keep them up if need be. You can"t force education on anyone. The reaper is on the way though since we have likely experienced the best of times. Sometime in the distant future our kids will be hungry for education because times are so bad economically. I"m afraid it is closer than we think.

AZ Peapicker,

My thoughts exactly.Create non thinking people has always been the aim of the government.

Last week I went to a fast food restaurant. My bill was $3.41. I gave the gal 3 dollar bills, one quarter, one dime, and one penny, ($3.46) hoping to get a nickel back and avoid a bunch of pennies. She handed me my penny, told me I gave her too much, and gave me my change--you guessed it--4 paennies. Guess I'm not as smart as I thought!!
No, I didn't bother explaining it!

You really did good, seeing as you only gave her $3.36 to begin with, lol.....

There, but for the grace of God goes I. It's a good one to remember, I just wish I would remember it when I run across something like that. One of the problems is that the register automatically rings up sales tax(if it applies), and the cashier may not know the rates and where they apply. One problem with making everything idiot-proof is that we just breed better idiots. oops There but for the grace of God goes I.

They don't know cars either.Went in to a store to get tuneup parts for my Studebaker. Kid told me they don't sell foreign car parts.

Once gave a kid 4 dollars to pay for a 3.50 bill. Kid couldn't make change.

If you really want to see the "deer caught in the headlights" LOOK...just ask for 15 gallons of gas. They grab the calculator but don't know how to calculate the total!

Priceless!

P.S. If you ask for 10 gallons and they grab the calculator. Then you tell them to just move the decimal over one digit to the right ($3.799 per galoon x 10 gallons = $37.99)...they look at you like you are speaking Latin!

I'm a 4th grade teacher. Have been for nearly two decades. I'll tell you the problem.

New teachers have absolutely no idea what they are doing. They want everything spelled out for them. If they don't have someone tell them how to do everything they just get a glazed looked on their faces. Kind of like the kid at the register. We had a math coordinator about 15 years ago that said everything should be fun and cooperative. The most math problems you ever need to assign is 10. She and I didn't get along so hot cause I am of the school that believes you need to be able to do it on your own. That was when I started using the math books from the 70's. I want lots of math problems. If there are only a few you might just get lucky and pass. If there are 30 of them I can catch you being dumb and fix it.

All of the heavy lifting has been taken out of school and that's not right. I have a sign above my desk that says "Get to work - you aren't getting paid to believe in the power of your dreams". I point at it often.

That being said, there are some real go-getters out there. It just seems that there are so many less than there used to be. I blame video games for one.

Kids or Teachers?

If you want to see a deer in the headlights look, take an older truck to a young mechanic, show him the carburetor, and tell him you"re having some trouble with the needle valve.

I went into a parts store a few years ago and told the young fella that I needed an alternator for my "71 International pickup. As he was trying to find it on the computer, he said, "That"s made by Ford, isn"t it?"

This International has a manual choke for starting. I could leave the keys in it, because there aren"t many people around anymore who know what a choke is, or how to use it.

A 1953 Dodge pickup that I drove in the 70s had a floor starter button. Turn the key to on, and mash the button with your right foot and it would start. I could leave the keys in it, no problem. Nobody was going anywhere with it.

Cashier School 101, day one-
If the scanner won't read the bar code, look at numbers at bottom of bar code, enter those numbers on the keypad. Does the same thing as scanning, but a bit slower.

Same thing in my grocery store. People will wait in line check out with someone that knows what he/she is doing while nobody goes to the young chasier. Wonder why?

(quoted from post at 11:17:19 08/10/12) Doesn't say much for our teachers and their superiors in the educational system.

Have you been in a school recently? Teachers can only teach kids that want to learn. These brainless wonders that are being turned out of our schools are that way because they are not being raised to value an education. Their parents do not give a crap if they can read, write, or do math.

My wife is a first grade teacher, her kids come to school in the middle of winter with flip flops and no coat. I have spent my own money to buy these kids shoes, coats, and food.

Stop blaming the education system and look at the people that are using it as a baby sitting service.

davemk has it right...if we try to have kids really learn, they refuse,
it is the school's fault for making it too hard for their kid. It used to
be schools had reluctant learners...now they are resistant entitled
learners backed up by their parents!

Just think, if these dimwits were around in our forefather's days. They were able to found our country and write all those documents, letters of corespondence, and win a war. All with no school system in place. Imagine asking this store clerk with an IQ 5 points higher than a turd to spell Constitution! Wisbaker has it right! I live in an area where the public scools have a grad rate of 25%! but my kids parochial school has a 95% rate of going on to college, with 1/2 the per pupil cost!

How about convincing parents to vote in school board officials who think education should come first and sports second?
Most of the teachers in our small school do double duty as coaches or some other responsibility outside the classroom.
Our quality of education sure improved when we started hiring teachers who could also coach vs hiring coaches who would teach.

It must have been nice to grow up in the 40's, 50's and 60's because idiots didn't exist back then. I don't think idiots were even invented until 1971. The schools were just too good before then to have any idiots.

The biggest difference between now and the "good ol' days" when the schools were so much better is I would bet your parents made sure you understood the value of an education. In other words, they would apply guidance to your backside and "encourage" you to do what needed to be done. I know mine did. In too many cases, that does NOT happen anymore. Private school parents are shelling out some bucks for their child to be at school, so you can bet they are also going to make sure their child does what needs to be done. It is really no surprise their students do well. I take responsibility for my own shortcomings and work to be a better teacher EVERYDAY. I don't want to fail any of my students, but I won't take responsibility for the things I have absolutely zero control over.

Sure, there are some crappy teachers. I've worked with several, but I've worked with far more teachers willing to do whatever it takes for their students to be successful. And yes, the unions protect the crappy teachers and have more influence than they should. I have found the teachers who are most involved in the workings of the union, are the grumpiest, most negative, and least effective teachers. It doesn't have to be that way. Do something about it. It is nearly impossible for a teacher to make a meaningful change at a school, but if enough parents/patrons want something to happen, it will happen. (I will not continue to be a teacher if I am ever required to join a union as a condition of my employment.)

The "PUBLIC" in public schools doesn't refer to who gets to go through the front door. It refers to who runs the school. The PUBLIC. YOU. ME. US. Ultimately the teachers are doing as they are told by the administrators who answer to the Superintendent, as well as local and state school boards. Don't forget the federal regulators and their requirements! If you have the answers, get elected to the school board. Get things changed. The good teachers want their students to achieve at the highest level possible. Get rid of the teachers who don't or won't or can't. The public can tell the unions to go fly a kite and in many cases they should. Why do school boards and states continue to contract with teachers who aren't getting the job done?

Just a teacher,
Henry

How many times have you seen a store close their doors and throw everybody out on a clear sunny day because of a power failure. None of them can operate without the light thingy.

I firmly believe that most people have "nostegia" when it comes to their school days. It is equal parts of nostalgia and amnesia.

I don't remember a lot of things, but about 25 years ago while stationed in Missouri. 3 of us loaded up and ventured to some town way out in the boonies to attend a funeral of one of the shop civilian's kid (cancer)... Anyway, we'd spent a lot of time with the kid and weren't taking things real well.

Stopped to get gas at this little 2 pump store in the middle of nowhere. Had one of the coke machines out frt that you open the little door and pull out the bottle by the cap. Asked for the restroom and it was a double outhouse out back. Went to the cooler and had to move cups of bait out of the way to get a coke. Anyway, grabbed a qt of oil, had the gas, and we set our cokes on the counter... Guy looked at everything, scratched his head a little and started to give us a total. Buddy grabbed a cigar and 2 candy bars and laid them with the cokes. The look that guy gave was priceless....... He went in the back and came back with a pencil/paper, wrote everything down and added it up with a calculator (no register, just a cash box)....Gave us something to laugh about the rest of the trip/day and took our minds off a little... Don't remember just where it was but can see the place like it was yesterday....
