chopping corn

A good friend of mine bought this corn and had it chopped for silage. This was a first for me. We ran 5 trucks and hauled it about 10 miles to the silo. I have never seen a head like this one. To say the least, I was very impressed.

I run a chopper for a guy and he has a 7700 and 7850 j.d choppers with the j.d. kemper heads. 1 is a 10 row 30" on the 7850 and a 8 row 30" on the 7700. They are great cutting across the ends and if you wonder a little you don't have to worry about leaning rows. I really like them in drilled cane. The only drawback is if you have down crops. They don't do anything but plug. The head can't get under it and it pushes the crop.

I helped a guy a few years ago. The machine he had was about 15 years old wit a 6 row head. I don't remember the model no. Took 50 seconds to fill a 24 ft long by 8ft high box. With only 3 trucks the chopper did alot of waiting.

A farm where I hung out as a kid has grown since then. They run two big NH choppers with 6 row heads. They run 15 trucks because they have some miles to the more distant fields. I don't know how a driver coming into the field knows which chopper to follow. Probably by radio.

That's what the big boys use around here. I guess you can go right crossways of the field if you want to.

They call those "Kemper" heads around here. Been around for 10 years or so.

Basically it allows them to chop in whatever direction they feel like. They don't have to follow the rows.

My son works on them almost full-time. The JD dealer in central MN is a "Focus" dealer for choppers. They have many customers in both Dakota"s, Iowa, even one in Illinois. One was running 4 machines last year. Last year it was early frost, this year it"s the widespread drought that gives him long days. Winter time, he rebuilds them. Says an annual is likely 13 grand or more. Re cutting any direction- when opening a field, they run the chopper in a circle to fill out one truck, 2nd truck pulls in when the chopper gets back to the split.

Yes, this guy went anywhere he wanted to go. He finished one small field going cross ways of the rows. I could see where one disadvantage of this head would be downed stalks. 5 trucks and hauling it as far as we did he had quite a bit of down time.
