O/T GPS Units.............

What kind of GPS units do some of ya'll have, and what has been your experience with them?

I started with a Garmin Nuvi 200 about four years ago. It was flawless until it got old enough to not recognize some addressses in new developments, and it cost some $70 to dupdate it.

Last winter, I got a Garmin Nuvi 1300LM with lifetime free updates. It's junk. There's a link on Garmin's website to report errors, and I reported that there were so many errors in this 1300LM that I couldn't begin to record them all. Naturally, I never heard back.

I've been using the 1300 as the main unit, but still carry the 200 as a backup, and I've bailed myself out with the 200 several times.

Starting today, I'm going back to the 200 and will use the new 1300 as a backup till I resolve something.

Bought a Garmin 205W about 5 years ago that worked well until about 6months ago. It suddenly went senile, couldn't find its way home, and would have itself out in fields rather than on the highway.

Bought a Garmin 1450 and it has worked well so far. It has a larger screen and other features that were not on the 250. Time will tell. Joe

garmin 87 maybe 97? I use it so seldom i have to figure out how to use it each time. All ive ever used it for was to find a fishing hole again.

have 2 Garmin. 160 & 1450. Both work very well for me. Only problem I have is with the 160. I can only use it in my car, it won't work in the truck or wife's car.

Don't know what you folks pay, but it's almost cheaper to throw away and get new than upgrade here.... Best one I had was a store brand sold at the grocery store (ALDI) recognized right of ways thru fields/woods was accurate and easy to read. Just didn't hold up too good when I plugged it in behind a dime that had fell into the lighter socket.... Since then, I use a navigon sumpin and the wife has navigon.

Have had a Garmin 260 for four years. I travel a five state area for work and the unit has only let me down a few times. Been very happy wih it. Haven't upgraded the map but it hasn't been a big issue. For the price of a map upgrade I would probably instead get a newer unit with upgraded features (speed limits, free lifetime map upgrades, etc).

I find myself using the maps app on my Droid phone more and more. The ability to use satellite view with navigation is very handy.

I'm on my third Magellan they seem to be quite accurate but don't last very long in my case anyway.
I liked my last one it had Bluetooth for the cell phone but it up an quit on me now my new one doesn't have Bluetooth and I sure miss it.

I just checked out Consumer Reports ratings and Garmin Nuvi series are top-rated with a few Tom Toms showing up as I went down the list. No other brands until way down the list. I got onto the CR site with no passwords. Give it a try.

I didn't really believe in them until a few years ago. SWMBO's cousin got one and had to rub it in just after they came out, and his cost around $300. "My GPS this", and "My GPS that", was all he talked about. Then SWMBO and dawter bought a couple of them at the QVC store in Lancaster for $39.95. I really didn't think much of them until I started using this thing, and it has opened my eyes. Cous is PO'ed because the tightwad thinks he got gypped, and SWMBO doesn't have to ask for directions all the time. The only thing that torques me, is that we used to stick up a mast daily on patrol to update our SINS gear during our Polaris and Poseidon patrols. This was a multi- billion dollar goberment system that we used for navigation and targeting. And now I've got this $40 gadjet on my dash that's as accurate as the one we used when I was in the service and doesn't look intimidating at all. And this thing even talks to me. And it doesn't annoy me like the war department does. At least, not most of the time...

Goose,

My wife has a Garmin Nuvii 265 that she's had for a couple of years. She bought the lifetime updates so she's been able to update maps a few times since she bought it initially.

It has been a great help to her, however, she just did an update to the maps about a week ago, and it has not been a good update. Frankly, she'd like to undo the update but doesn't know how to do so.

I think they're helpful in most cases.

I have a Navigon, but the maps now are several years out of date. I have tried to update them but I must be doing something wrong. Navigon website says I have 3 free updates, so I'll have to keep trying. Hate to chuck such a good machine away.

GPS has been real fun here this summer, the bridge is out here in town unfortunately most GPS units don't know that, lot of trucks have woven them selves through the construction to get to the place the bridge is supposed to be and not be able to turn around. Of course the state & city could help by putting up signage AT THE EXIT informing everyone the bridge is closed but unfortunately the law requires the notification be x miles from the outage, which means it's about a mile before the exit so folks are exiting into the loop with the bridge out to avoid the bridge on the expressway that isn't out but they it's out because of the sign.

Mine is a Tom Tom and it has never failed to get me where I'm going. I programed mine in my west Texas driveway to take me to my brothers Apple Valley Ca home, it took me right to his front door. This is my first GPS and I don't know anything about all the others.

"She Who Must Be Obeyed". It's one of those important "Rules". Like: "The Woman Is Ready When She's Ready. The Man Must Be Ready At All Times". AKA: "TWIRWSRTMMBRAAT".

I have a Garmin 1450 with FREE lifetime updates. This replaced a big piece of crap TOMTOM we had. It would put us in a middle of a field for our destination. THe closest it ever got us was about 3 miles away. One time it even had us on the wrong side of a county.

The Garmin has never failed us and we were in some pretty remote areas.

I have had several Cobra GPS units. I started out with a simple Cobra 2100 six years ago. It was just a model for cars but really worked pretty good but then about two years ago you could not update it anymore.

I now have a Cobra 7750 now. I like it and it is much better as it can programed for Practical miles( truck miles). It is like any other one though, you need to check the route before hand so you are sure it is directing you correctly.

Last year Google Maps was messed up and listed my driveway as the road to the local golf course. We got a few cars each week. The funny thing is that it was always someone on their "Smart" phone. The golf course is six miles away from me. LOL

Would never trust one and no intentions of ever owning one. Last week a truck pulled in our lane, said that was where the unit directed him. We are on the east side of a north-south road. The address he was looking for is on a east-west road that ends .3 mile east of the end of my driveway with a 90* bend going south and then there is anouther north-south road that crosses the one he was looking for before his place. And no smart (DUMB) phones for me, mine will only make or recieve a call and NO voice mail or anything else.

They do sometimes make some errors like that out in the rurals. A guy has to pay attention and you can usually figure it out as you close in.

But they can be of utmost value when driving in cities you are not familiar with. A paper map is no help in traffic. And you cannot drive in NYC without one, not that I advise it under any circumstances. But as a delivery guy, it"s a must.

They're good at cleansing the gene pools a little also...... Been plenty of folks drowned by zooming off ferry landings here.......-
