I support the locals!Even if I pay more than Walmart, etc,The locals are my neighbors, friends, customers, etc.buying local keeps their doors open.Buy American, too if possible!!Same reason.

I do also, Local oldtime hardward has all I need, Also He is a lot better to get along with. Prices are mostly as good as wallfart.

I sure try to.

The local auto parts guy ROUTINLY charges 2X the normal prices. He only gets my busines if I GOTTA have it right away. Otherwise it's the www...

I realize it costs more to do business on a small scale, in a small town, but if you aren't going to give me a DECENT deal, I'll go up the road a bit.
I'll support them if they return the favor.

Salida, CO is a small town, We even have a Walmart. I support every business I can. Hardware is higher than Murdochs but I still by some stuff there too. Some times I even have to go to www, and towns 60+ miles away. Heck I have even had to go to Delta. They all try and support me, so just love spreading my hard earnings around. We even have more than one ice cream place.

I guess it was just like pullin’ teeth, but I finally said I’d go down to that new super discount store just north of Tupelo;

It was the biggest store I’d ever seen--- couldn’t see the end of the aisle---and this nice old lady met us at the door and said “Welcome!” , with a smile.

Well, I noticed the dog food right away, and it had a real good price. I loaded up two 50-pound sacks and said, “Man, this place is nice!”

Well, I got me some plugs for my old truck, and saved $2.00 on all eight. Then I loaded my buggy with shovels and diggers, a hammer, some pliers and a rake.

I was all excited as I turned to my wife, “I saved $3.00 on this motor oil alone.” She said, “Now ain’t you glad you came? You can’t get these prices back at home.”

That’s when it hit me like a slap in the face: I’d only thought of myself. I rolled my buggy back around the store, puttin’ those things back on the shelf.

I thought about the gang at the feed store, and how they’d always helped me out. How they let me feed those 90 days when my checkbook had lost its clout.

Mr. Booth down at the hardware store, and how he came to let me in, that cold and rainy Saturday night when I was broke, and down in the field again.

Dick down at the auto parts store, when he didn’t get that part, let me use his brand-new pickup truck so I could get my hay up before dark.

Well, I suppose I missed some bargains that I had right in my hands, but when I left the store that day I was a much, much richer man.

JerryS; Looking at it from your angle, just because it costs less does not make it a bargain does it? The real bargains are back at home at those businesses you described. Merchants who treat you like that are becoming an endangered species.

I would ove to shop at my local merchants. When I go to work at 7:30 am, most of them are closed. When I get done with work at 6pm, most of them are closed. On Sunday when I got all day to shop aint none of them open. Doesn't seem like they want my buisness too bad.

I try to the extent that we can both eat a decent meal.... I won't eat macaroni and cheese so they can eat steak....Give me a price so we can both get a bucket of chicken, and I'll be loyal....

Sawmill/builder in town that I/we deal with as much as we possibly can/need just about duped me a few days ago...... I have ordered metal roofing thru him in the past with a little higher prices, but decent because everything was at his place when ready and I just had to pull the wagon a half mile, load up my "shed" that he had already cut and marked for me and go put it together. FF and I need about 2000 sq ft of roof panels, told him what I need and went back the next day for prices.... Couldn't believe what I was seeing... Happened to see the company he was ordering from, went online and asked for a quote. Delivered directly to our house with all screws, top caps, some cosmetic stuff and sealer is just at half what he was gonna charge me just for the roof panels.

I could/would support 30% for him to make the call and load the stuff on my wagon when it gets here but at over 125% he just lost any future business from me.

Yeah, Wife had to get a new vacum from Wallfart a year ago, Well that nice old woman that said hello to us when we walked in was chaseing us out when we left cause she thought we were stealing it!!! We are in our late 50s with good clean duds, no tads or hardware on us. Best part was that the wife was on some cold meds. They made her hot headed and out spoken, She can"t hear real well either, She was bout 10" in front of me when Mrs Wallmart ran up to Me asking for the bill of sale, I knew I had to get the wife stoped before she went though the door, she had the bill of sale and I had the cart. I let out a yell PAT! She didn"t hear Me, Let out another yell PAT!!! People are started to mover out of the way like Im going to shoot them or something, Wife hears Me this time comes back and says WHAT??? Told her Mrs. Wallmart needs to see the bill of sale. Wife says WHAT THE ELL!! Digs in her purse Finds the bill of sale, sticks it in Mrs. Wallmart"s face and says HERES YOUR DAMM BILL OF SALE!!!!! spins round and walks out the door, I trun to Mrs. Wallmart and said Have a good day!

lived texes creek for 5 years walmart is canyon city was about 10 per cent cheaper than salida asked corporat why answer tourint area! Bought gas at texas crek little higher but local business . I also shop local when possible, however some times selection is necessary.

Asking to see the receipt is pretty common and the local BJ's (wholesale) has the greeter check everybody as they leave.

My friends and neighbors work at Walmart Kmart,Target etc and make more $$$ and with better benefits than they did working for locally owned businesses and the prices are lower at the Big Box stores so everyone in the community is better off except a very few.Actually a good friend of mine that used to own a hardware store is now a manager at Lowes and says he's far better off than he was with his store. And the big box stores and the locals sell the same mechandise that comes from the same place the difference is Walmart gets it straight from the manufacturer and the local small guys have to go thru a couple wholesalers.

We shop a fair amount at Walmart, and have noticed a lot of racial profiling at the security check. We have a large population of native Americans in our area and they all get checked, they just expect it, so they stop. We just smile and walk right by, only time we were checked was with a large TV!

I had 2 picnic tables to finish in late fall.I usually buy my galv spikes in 35 or 50 pound boxes. No hardware stores in town for 30 years.I was at a hardware 12 miles from home.Bought some grain and other items and asked for 2 pounds of 16p spikes. They came in pound boxes with the store name on the box. When I got home I looked at the slip.Nails are a business expense.3.99 a pound, usual price is 1.69 last year. this year 1.89.I didnt want a 35 or 50 box sitting all winter but really got roasted on those 1 pound boxes.Stopped at a hardware store 10 miles south of us and asked the price of 10 10 10 fertilzer.19.95 no thanks I pay 12.95 from my usual dealer. That hardware closed a year after the new owners bought it.Ive had my own business on a country cross road since 1966, its been hard going. We made a trip last weekend and I notice a lot of small businesses closed up.

jerry if you live near the tupelo i am think of just go to scruggs by the mall locally own and some things they beat lowes price with and are cheapest on farm chemicals i have found and carry just about anything you need except groceries

Both Sam"s and WM ask to see your receipt when leaving. Why? Cuz they have merchandise available AFTER the checkout lanes...and people steal it....might be a dumb store design, but that"s how they build them. Also, if you pay for merchandise (EX- electronics) at the kiosk, do you want to wait in a long checkout line if that is the only exit to the store?
