1997 F-350 problems

Since this is my farm truck I thought I would post here.

Saturday my 1997 F-350 with a 460 gas burner started having problems cranking. It turns over just fine but take a few minutes of turning before it decides to crank, hot or cold, the colder the more of a problem this is.

No spitting or sputtering.

I does not matter which tank is on, i do hear the fuel pump running and cut off after turning the ignition on. It does have fuel pressure on the fuel rail, now much I do not know.

Once it cranks it runs fine, I pulled a load of cows down the interstate a several miles running 75 without any issues, I just knew not to cut it off until I got it back home.

When it does crank I can smell gas from the exhaust until for a few seconds.

Noting noticeably wrong with the distributor, rotor or plug wires and it is getting spark.

Thank you for any help.

Cranks as in the engine decides to start running on its own like it needs to.

Turns over as in the starter is spinning the engine properly but the engine will not start running.

Sorry for not using the terms correctly.

Motorcraft plugs have less than 5,000 miles on them and the air filter is fine. Fuel filter is only a few months old.

Once it is running everything is fine, plenty of power. Just hard to get it running.

It's more like something is different with the fuel delivery while trying to start the engine and it is fine once the engine is running.

Any check engine light on ? You may try unplugged MAF sensor or TPS see if that makes difference . I'd want to see fuel pressure reading . Also unplug vac hose off fuel pressure reg , see if it's leaking. Couple odd things I've ran into on these. Wiring connector deteriating at PCM. Wiring harness rubbing on egr tube on back of engine . Try wiggling these when it is running see if it miss's or stalls .

No lights on. I am going to get a pressure gauge today and see what the fuel pressure is.

I will also check the wiring closer today. Truck only has 82,000 miles on it and has always been stored in a garage but things still deteriorate over 15 years.

Thank you for your help.

The 460 i had would not start without oil pressure,it had a switch at the back of intake,if your checkvalve in the oil pump is not holding it will take a quite a few turns to pick up prime.

You might check the fuel pressure on it.

I had a '92 F250 that had a faulty pressure regulator that caused trouble.

I would also be very curious if it has the proper pressure at the instant you start cranking or if it has to build up slightly before it will start...

As soon as I turn the ignition switch on the fuel pressure goes to 35 to 40 psi. Once I finally get it running it is holding at 40 psi.

All the wring to everything looks good. Still no check engine light. Oil pressure is building up while the engine is spinning over trying to crank.

sounds like you got an injector leaking down and flooding engine...try flooring it just like you would a carburated engine thats flooded...if it cranks up,replace the bad injector.real common problem when i was still wearin a fomoco uniform.

Check battery voltage while cranking. My truck cranked ok with a frozen cell in the battery but would not fire.I think you get no spark if the battery voltage is low.

Check the electrical plugs at the distributor, know trouble spot in that ignition system. Crappy connector, doesn't make good contacts...
