Sir,
My grandparents (87 and 85) recently moved from their home since '57 to an assisted living apartment. I am 600 miles away and got to visit once this summer and will probably be 2 years before I get back (praying they're still with us).
Anyway.... I would love to do more than just call and talk to assist them in this transition but haven't much for ideas on what I could do. If I ask them they will of course be gracious and humble and not share any needs/desires they might have.
As a man of experience do you have any suggestions
???

never have understood what a "wild fire" is & how fire could move unless you live in a wooded or forest area...there is a thing called a lawn mower that keeps your yard fireproof & a machine called a bush-hog that keeps brush at bay ....every squire inch of the land where I live [Miss. delta] is in crops & roadsides are cut like your yard....what is done with the land around you & why is it allowed to grow up with brush ?..I have a hard time understanding this condition....take care

You obviously have never been around HOT grass fires, like we have had this year. Our yard is the greenest in this area, and I am pretty sure a fire would burn, and jump right over it.

any way you can plow a firebreak, at least around your home and outbuildings? make it wide, then soak the heck out of everything might save it

Sounds as if U have lived a sheltered life and never been West of Miss. Wild fires are not easely controlled and will burn fast because they generate their own wind. Even yards that have sprinklers and are nice and green will burn. Range (wild) fires in large open areas are hard to stop under the best of conditions...that being high humity and cool temps.

The delta is mostly flat and easy to mow. Most of the Oklahoma area I've seen has the kind of terrain that's not all that easy to maintain. Jim

I shoot PD in north TX & west OK & have seen short sparse grass there but should be a easy stop with a disk....been very dry here & my 3ac. yard is brown & people have set it on fire by throwing cig. out but I just run the lawnmower over it & it's out...surely a fire lane or two 3 or 400 yards from your house would protect your house...wouldn't control of brush/grass in the spring help this problem ?..if I lived there I'd cut or disk everything in sight before I let my house burn...I've burned my corn & rice fields off after harvest for years & just disk around what you don't want to burn...thanks for the replys & take care

First I want to clear up our situation My wife and I live in a nursing home in a fair size town.
The other thing is if you have never seen a Wild Fire and have no idea of the speed they move at and how they spread. You have no idea what it is like to be in bed and get woke up "THE WILD FIRES OUTSIDE OF TOWN HAVE FLAIRED UP AND WE MAY HAVE TO EVACUATE THE BUILDING" You cannot do much. Your room door opens and nurse enters. HERE, WE ARE PUTTING THESE WRIST BAND ON EVERYONE IT HAS YOR NAME AND ALL OF yOU MEDICATION SO IF WE HAVE TO MOVE OUT WE WILL HAVE IMMEDIATE MEDICAL INFORMATION. Listening to TV. We are in the BIG PIPRLINE COUNTRY. These fellowe have a lot of big earth moving equipment and they know how to use it. But they can do nothing about the wind. This morning ther was a lot of the staff cam in looking tired but had a smile on there face, there men had met mother nature head on and held there own. Thanks to you all you are some of God's angels looking ove us. gitrib

I wish you good luck!!! I am glad that wild fires are not an issue where I live at. I still don't understand how they can burn up all of the homes they seem to do. I would think you could build a more fire resistant home than the regular construction methods.

didn't intend to get you upset ..remember that GOD is always in charge !!...will be praying for you & the wife...take care & keep us informed ...Kent
