hydraulic oil??

Don't beat me up here.. This just crossed my mind and wondering if it will work or why it would be a bad idea.....

Have a couple of seals leaking (seeping) a little on the hydraulics (lift arms and the control lever shaft).

Remember the "fix" for slight main seal leaks was adding a quart of ATF to the motor oil.

Would ATF hurt the hydraulic system on an old tractor? Would adding a couple quarts to a 20 qt system be enough to swell the seals a little to stop the leaks?

Just a thought, but don't want to do any damage. ATF is hydraulic fluid also isn't it?

Thanks, Dave

ATF is not hydraulic fluid- 10 or 20 weight nondetergent oil is close to hydraulic oil- and was JD standard for a long time. Brake fluid is not a good idea for most hydraulic systems- exception for some specialized hydraulics that use brake fluid based fluids, I"ve read of aircraft systems that have used it, some artic equipment. As for the leaky seals possible swell to stop leak?- the ATF stop seal leak additives have been used in some old hydrauic units at times locally, sometimes with a splash of ATF Dextron3, sometimes ATF added to hydraulic reservors, sometimes power steering fluid seal sealer and the units have been used another season or so successfully, slows down leaks on marginal seals. Really worn seals, it"ll get you home with equipment up, 40 weight non-detergent will be slower leak and in summer will flow and with old rawhide seal will help some. I wouldn"t get under anything heavy if the leak was bad on supporting hydraulic cylinder- but corn heads on combine with slight leak and 40 weight added have finish season and the next year before refurbish and not collapsed. Lucas makes hyd. fluid booster and stop leak that's
supposed to stop minor leaks and make your hyd's
work better. ATF is used as hyd. fluid in some
applications like truck hoists and snow plows
because it keeps the same viscosity in a wide
temperature range. In a tractor it's not the right
oil to use.
