Slightly OT: HD Truck flashers/turn signal/ brk lights

Where I work we have a '84 IH HD truck which has never been equipped with seperate 4-way hazards. It has light set up just like a car that stop flashing when the brake pedal is applied. I thought HD trucks have had seperately activated flashers forever and this is the only truck I've seen this way. This is an air brake equipped truck. This has never been an issue for these twenty odd years but now one driver insists it be retrofit. Ever seen such a "new" truck this way? And how bad to rewire it?

Its because if your following the truck, and its flashers are on, and he hits the brakes, you want to see the brake lights so you dont KILL YOURSELF!!!!!!.

You can wire in separate lights for turn signal/emer flashers if you wish, but DONT screw with the brake lights!!!!!

Is it a tractor trailer or strait truck? My 2005 Ih is the same on the tractor, but when the trailer is hooked up they are separate. All tractors that I've seen use a single bulb light for turn and brake lights unless someone has added the extra after market. You will probly see that the front and side turns flash but the brake lights come on solid with the brakes.

Its a straight truck application. And i don't intend to Disable the brake lights! Just asking why on this particular unit the brake lights and flashers don't operate sepratetly like any truck you see on the road stopping at the RR tracks with flashers on and brake lights lit up.

I think you are thinking of semi trailers, they use a seperate system from the truck. Trailers usually have 4 or more lights on the back where tractors and strait trucks usually have just 2. With one bulb on each side it will flash with the 4ways until you hit the brakes then they come on steady. On tractor trailers the trailer uses a seperate syestem with seperate fuses for the trailer. It would take a fair amount of work to add the extra lights and seperate them unless the truck is prewired for a trailer, them you could use the trailer system.

I have worked on navistars since the '70s and can t remember one where the brake lights stopped the flashers.I would bet wrong turn signal switch, or it origionaly was equiped with 4 tail lamps(odd tho).Your driver is right. WHAT model is it? S series i bet.
