O.T. ..Jeep brakes...

I drive a 1983 Jeep CJ7 with 5speed transmission & 258 6 cyl motor. Recently, my brakes have been giving me trouble. The brake pedal is getting low, spongy, requires pumping to get the brakes to work. I am not loosing any fluid & I bled the system & there was no air in the lines. Where should I start my troubleshooting? Can this be the result of the check valve @ the brake booster failing? Thanks for info.

dave is probably right, if the peddle is spongy its usually the mastercylinder, also if you come to a stop, hold the brake peddle down and in a few seconds the peddle goes further down, there is no doubt, if the peddle is hard, with lots of travel, it usualy means the rear brake adjusters have stopped working, either rusted up or worn shoes, but if thats the case the peddle will he hard, not spongy

While your at it check the wheel cylinders also. I replaced the master cylinder on my Jeep in 1998 but I've had to replace the wheel cylinders a half dozen times since then. There will be some oil leakage around them when they start going bad. You'll have to pull the break drum to really make a good inspection.

A front caliper is likely to be stuck on its slider system. This causes the puck to be pushed back into the cylinder (maybe 1/4") when that happens the amount of fluid needed to make it stick out (flexing the support to the spindle) is excessive. Whenyou release the pedal, the structure of that support once again pushes the fluid back into the master. Jim
