The scrap yards around here take old batteries in for cash now. Had the battery out of my JD so I could put a charge on it. Had it on my front porch next morning it was gone. Another $100 for a new battery for a $6 scrap price.

Too bad that they don t have a open season on them. Ithink that would stop a lot of it.
Even if you catch them in the act , they don t do anything to them & they know it . So your left holding the bag .

Yup,and even those that rather steal than work are figureing out it's easier to stays home and makes tricycle motors and let the gubment send a check.

Scrap dealers are supposed to photocopy the drivers licence of anyone who is selling scrap, and file it with a picture of the sold items. It would make it easier to catch thieves like that, but very few do.

And you did the work of taking it out for them.
At least they didn't cut your battery cables to get it out.
Good waste of breathing air.

Too bad about your battery or for anyone that has stuff ripped off...........
But, remember how all the experts on here slammed me and beat me up cause I ran someone outta my pasture for takin horse poop? And for tryin to get a neighbor to (even do it for him) clean his junk up bordering one of my places (which would keep strangers from coming into the area)?

I don't have anything locked up including my car that sets on the street. Nothing gets stolen.... Hate to think what would come up missing if I'da just let folks run over the place...

That's my lesson for today class. Be vigilant, look strangers in the eye and make them feel that you see them and will remember them (when they are around your place).

Never hurts to inventory all your stuff, mark as necessary, record it in several copies (on a CD with plenty of pics)...

Good luck.

I have a 4 camera system in my shop and made it quite clear to everyone in the nieghborhood that my place was rigged with cameras. Had one incidence of vandalism (that is when i put the cameras in) and nothing since then.

I even keep game cameras hidden down by my hunting cabin, and have others that I move around. Not to take photos of deer and turkey though.

A local yard here was shut down for supposedly buying stolen items, even though they did take copies of drivers licenses, I know because I took some stuff there a few times when cleaning up the yard, remodeling the house, replacing water heater, etc. Also, I personally know the owners of this yard and it had been in operation for over 50 years. They would report suspicious stuff to the cops voluntarily, like when a guy turned in am aluminum tailgate off a dump trailer. I am just thinking that since this yard paid more then the other two around, and someone at one of those other yards is connected with someone. Of course the guys they were buying from are all still out there, they are just taking their 'goods' to another yard, so shutting down the one yard did nothing for the problem.

Dave2,
Sorry I criticized you for protecting your property. I guess I was having a tree hugging teachable moment that day. I don't like to admit it but I probably would get myself into a lot of trouble if I caught someone stealing my tractor battery or tools or other stuff.

Photocopying their license and taking pictures of the sold items is bogus.

How are you going to identify your battery in a picture? It's impossible, and they know it.

I have a game camera they are fairly cheap, you set them up to flash as they take your picture. Crooks leave fast when they know their picture. Has been taken. Used it on my Christmas tree lot to stop stealing worked quite good until I forgot to bring it in after I stopped selling trees they came by and stole my camera. Bummer

Yesterday I went for a bike ride and half mile down the road was a very large safe, about the size of a refrigerator, along the side of the road with the door missing. Found the door about 200 ft from safe. Found a corner of a cancelled check with a Farmer's name on it and part of his phone #. He lives in the county to the North. Went to the phone book and started calling. Found him after the second call. Come to find out they stold his pick-up to hall it away.

Called the sheriff's dept and reported what I found. They came out and wasn't the least bit interested. He filed the report and called the next county where the theift occured. They didn't seem to be interested either. Said the insurance now owns the safe.

While the officer was there an ATV goes buy. Officer stopped him and asked him some questions and let him go.

I asked the officer why they don't put a stop to ATV driving up and down the road especially at 2-3 am? The ATV's are mobile meth labs. You're not going to believe this. Officer said they are instructed not to chase ATV'S.

So, if anyone wants to commit a crime where I live, do it on an ATV and you won't have to worry about the cops chasing you. Isn't that just insane?

The farmer who lost his safe with all his tax records and important documents, called me today and said a towing company has his truck.
