John Deere round spoke wheel tube protector

I have a 1935 John Deere B with round spoke wheels. I removed the tires to sandblast the wheels and found there is a rubber band around the center of the rim to protect the tube from the spokes where they are mounted to the rim. My questions, are they necessary and is there anyone who offers such a thing new? I believe these are OEM. They are both in good condition, one is a little more stretchy, but I know I will ruin them by removing them. Thanks

I"m told you can get by with a few rounds of duct tape. Seems like it"d work if you don"t have any inner tubes laying around.

Duct tape works very good. Have a pair of rims I wrapped with duct tape in the mid 80's and the tubes still don't stick to the rims.
