With experience on 20+/- year old VW's? Only thing annoying about my little car (except that it could set 3-4 inches higher) is the driver door hinges. Extremely simple but don't seem to be replaceable (to the untrained eye). Just wondering if anyone knows what (if anything) can be replaced to tighten the door. Looks like it could be a matter of drivingout the pins and installing new ones (??).

Thanks for any tips.

Dave check the local parts place. Here we can get new hinge pins and bushings. Don't know about VW.

Just decided I like it enough to preserve it (driver door is a little sloppy) today. Will look at a couple stores, just thought someone here may know.

Thanks...

(quoted from post at 11:05:23 07/22/12) Jes saw them off and pretend yer a jeep----

Was thinkin the dukes of hazard thing and just weld the door shut and go thru the window.... Barely fit my big a$$ thru the open door tho, winder may be a liiiiiiittle tricky......

As mentioned you probably can replace pins and bushings. When I did my truck I used my engine hoist to hold the door up while I drove out the pins. Word of caution, sometimes it is far easier to get a good angle for the removal than it is for the replacement. Check before you drive the old pin out, be a shame to have the door hanging in space for not being able to get the pin back in.

YMMV,

Put a hammer handle behind the hinge and close the door on it. Bottom hinge will raise the back corner, top will lower it Both will set it back at the same angle.
Have adjust a lot of doors with just a hammer handle. And it is a trick I learned in a body shop.

Dave,
There is a tool you can make up that goes into the door striker bolt and another that goes onto the door clasp, it looks like a 3 to 4 ft piece of heavy round rod about 1 to 2 inches in diam. You can put both striker bolt and clasp on to the rod and lift on the end,to realign the door hinge pins.Makes doors close like new. We also used a 2X4 under the door sill and against the rocker panel (padded) to adjust the door alignment. Hope it helps,
LOU

embarrassingly simple....... Parts cost less than 10 bucks and 30 minutes to change. Now, if I could just raise the whole car 4 inches
