shaft is removed from axel at last!

It took heat and 35 tons, but the guy with the 100 ton press got the hunk of shaft out of the axel last night!! Did not crush it to pieces, nor maim anyone with schrappnel. Price was really, really reasonable.

So if we'd had a stronger press frame, husband probably would have been able to do it with heat and his biggest bottle jack at home.

Any pictures of the parts after pressed apart? How do you put the axle part back on the other good shaft, back at the same press? What held it on, a key or just friction fit?

VernMI,

I know there was a key in beside the shaft.

Not decided yet... husband may give a try to building a very short, beefy frame for the 50 ton and try removing the other one at home. He is a persistent guy, and I think he just wants to accomplish the task if he can. If that won't work, he will have to take it back to the machinist with the 100 ton press.

I will try to remember to post some pictures this weekend. Busy between work and running the road with our kids this week.

Russ from MN,

I will mention it to him... but putting the shaft in our freezer would mean emptying it as it is upright, so we could not just lay it in there.

Check with local welding supplies and get some dry ice pellets(CO2). It's about -70 deg's and will work much better than a freezer. Diesel shops use it to install liners. A 15 lb. bag should cost no more than $20. Don't breath it in in a closed area and use gloves when handling it.
