soon as i put the positive battery cable on, the tractor will start up. the starter button doesn't seem to be sticking, and the key can be turned off, but it still starts anyway.i just replace celluloid with one just like the one on the tractor, could that celluloid be stuck in the open position, or is there something else wrong in my wiring?

Check the primary starting circuit (wiring between starter switch and solenoid) wireing. You will likely find a short to ground.

John, I think you mean you replaced the solenoid, and it could be stuck closed if you bought it at a less expensive place.
My first thought though would be to double check the wiring and make sure you don't have it touching somewhere.
Second would be to make sure you have the correct solenoid.
You could also disconnect the small control wire to see if it quits what it is currently doing. That would tell you if it's the control circuit or just plain stuck/shorted between the two big terminals.

Something that popped into my mind is the big wire from the battery and the big wire going to the starter are accidentally put on the same stud on the solenoid. Sounds goofy and I mean no offense to your mechanical abilities, but I have seen it--on my own tractor. Did it years ago when I was a young buck. OOPS! Jim

I did the same thing once...Your tractor uses a "grounding"solenoid.Replace the (wrong)solenoid with the correct new one. That should solve your problem.
