Pics of what aluminum window screen does for your A/C. The dirty screen was cleaned about once already this summer.

The second pic shows how easy it is to install with 2 screws on each side.

Well that certainly explains why this happens(photo below). Cleaning this will be an annual event, hard to believe there is that much dust in the air.

Also might add 2 things, there is a coating alleged to prevent the build up, supposed to be self cleaning, something you spray on the condenser and or evaporator coils, A/C technician would know more, true or not, and those double ended stiff tooth brush you get in your military rifle cleaning kit works great as a fin comb, to take care of all those little areas or large that get mashed in so easily when handling these, brushed em all out of mine, now you got me paranoid as to how fast that condenser will or can get plugged up, well its up 1 story from the ground, facing a gravel driveway that does not dust up, that was 10 years worth in there in the above photo.

at my house its the stuff from the cotton wood trees that fills them up. sometimes you can just peel it off like a blanket.

My A/C, with the clean screen ,will look like that after just one year, bugs, dust, and especially cotton wood trees. Not to mention, the water from evaporator, which I'm a believer, adds to the problem by making the crap you see on your condensor, harden in place. I have drain holes in all my A/c's. You don't see water on the condensor of a central A/c.

Many vets got sick at a convention because of the mold in A/C system. Don't remember all the details, it was many years ago.

Legionnaries disease, I remember that on the news, was a long time ago. In the early 90's, I was at one of my favorite establishments on the NJ shore, watching football, by chance was sitting under a diffuser and air coming out, I was darned sick for a week, weird thing was I could not sleep at all either, conked out for a long nap after I was well.

Incidentally, this particular unit, of '02 vintage, was meticulously cleaned, styrofoam insert had black mold, never shut em down when running cold in the the humid air, best to let the fan run and dry out that duct work that cold air passes through, I did drill a hole for condensate and tilted the unit, no trouble with it, but after reading the previous post, not sure what the deal is with that, 10 years in service, don't owe me much, it has R22 in it if that provides any helpful info, previous post says they are designed to run with condenser immersed in condensate water, does make a mess of a unit and stagnant water when not in use.

George Marsh,

Thanks for posting pics. I had mentioned in another post that I thought I would try out your idea... but I had it in my mind to cover the BACK of the A/C to keep it from getting dirty.
