I have a Farmall MD ( Starts on gas then you change it over to Diesel ) Can this be started on Diesel or must you always start it with gas and then switch it over to Diesel ?

The starter is not powerful enough to crank it on diesel. The only way is to pull it, but it will take a long pull at a speed appropriate for 3rd or 4th gear as the engine must generate enough heat to start. It depends on gas to build that heat. Work yes do it no. Jim

to further elaborate: I believe that engine is indirect injection, so even if the starter could turn it, it wouldn't fire without preheat. newer indirect injection engines use glow plugs to achieve the same results as the warm up period on gas.

I also have a MD. When it was new, and you killed it you might hit the starter RIGHT then it would start on Diesel, but a minute or two you had to start in on gas. And you best pull both levers at the same time.

We have pull started them. They weren't one of the better diesel designs.
One step better than an old Cat with a pony motor.

Just fix it or have it fixed so it will start reliably on gas and then switch over to diesel like it was meant to be...all things considered that's the cheapest way for an International gas start diesel, no there's no other practical way if you want a decent MD tractor.
