How do you tell if a cantaloupe is ripe?

I have several cantaloups in my garden that are turniing brown but still have a little green in the seams. Are they ripe? Roy

Smell is the best way for cantalope. IT's ripe when it smells like muskmelon. No smell, no good. Color is only sort of useful and it depends on the exact kind of melon you have.

Very gently lift it-not much - and turn it about one degree. If the stem just fell off, its ready. If stem is still attached, gently return it to its resting place.

Steve's smell test is good. I also can usually tell by thumping them with my finger tips. If they sound hollow then they are ripe.

Three tests. The stem should show cracking at the base and slip easily from the melon. The blossom end should be slightly soft right where the blossom was. You can tell by pressing on it there. Then if the melon has already been picked smell at the stem, should have nice sweet aroma, and again look for a stem that has slipped cleanly from the melon. Can't tell much from color, it varies by variety. If you wait too long the bugs will get into them.

Whatch it closely when it starts to turn ripe it changes fast. It will pull or disconnect from the stem easily!

Dad always told us kids that if we picked it up and if it wanted to come with us it would let go, and if not it wanted to grow up some more. Damn I should have stayed on the vine a little longer. Ha Ha

When the dog has it between her front paws on the front lawn gnawing on it, she only picks the ripe ones
