1975 Chevy Farm Truck

I had a guy recently offer to sell me a Chevy Farm truck. 20 foot box with metal grain racks, works fairly well. I know he said it was a 1975 but I didn't think to look at the model number.
Fair shape mechaincally, the cab is torn up pretty good, interior is in rough shape I mean.
He wants $5900 for it. What's something like that worth? Seems a bit high to me??

It would be hard to get that money for a truck like that even if it was a cherry truck with a diesel, air brakes, Fuller transmission, and a new set of radials. I'm assuming it's a 10 wheeler with a 20 ft body, but is it gas or diesel, hyd. or air brakes, and what kind of shape are the tires in? If you have to replace them, it would cost you a small fortune. GM made some good medium duty trucks in that time frame and in our area there are a lot of them on the road, but his price is way too high. We have 2 fire trucks in our department from that era and they are strong, reliable trucks. 70s and 80s GM trucks and 67-79 Fords are everywhere in this area. Even the big time guys with semis still use them for short runs hauling grain and hauling nurse tanks the rest of the year. We have a raggedy 67 Ford but it gets the job done just like a fancy truck would, and we aren't scared to make long trips with it. If you can get that old Chevrolet for a decent price you'll probably get a good truck though.

The NC Dept of AG. prints a newsletter every month and allows people to place ads. Such as: 1976 Chevy truck, 2 ton w/16ft. dump bed. $2000. 1976 F600 dump, hoist and pto approx 3 yrs. old. $3200. 1995 F450, w/tool body, $6000. 87 F700 16ft bed w/twin hoist, $5000. Yeah, I would say that's a little high.

Get the model number. It's probably a C70 if it's got a 20' grain box. If so, the man is right smack on the money on his price.

The smaller $2500 versions that everyone is talking about here are a lot less truck.

2 or 3 years ago, before scrap went up, I picked up a "79 tandem chevy C70 with 427 and 282 clark for $500 bucks and drove it home! It"s just a single drive with a drag axle. 20" rubber is around 80%! No bed at all though, but I had one to put on it.

Was just too good to pass up. BTO put the bed on a newer truck and just wanted old truck to disappear.
Generally though I"d think the 2500 range is about right.

Thats pretty high because a truck that large has to pass a dot inspection, and go threw all the scales ect. Around us the smaller singles actually get more $ because they can be lic. at 28,000 and avoid all that.

I looked at it again and it is a C65. Also the interior is in better shape than I remember last time I worked in it with him.

Ask if fas had any major work dne recently such as an engine rebuild. Of course you want to see the recepts.
You can put $3000+ in a 427 rebuild if the block has been rebored with o/s pistons, heads completely gone through, etc. It adds up fast if you replace the clutch, transmission bearings, etc.
The current owner may have more money in it than the truck is worth and trying to recover his costs. It is still over priced though.

If you are serious give it a good inspection for rust and patches. Paint was going through changes in this era after they took the lead out, seems like '73 and '74 were the worst years but it has been a long time since I took a good look at one.

I just sold a 1975 chevy C60 with 39000 original miles and a 20ft midwest bed with fold down stock racks for 3500.A neighor bought it new on a 40 acre farm.Took me 6 months to sell it for that.

Allan we need to hook up c70, or the 1700 ih with good hoist that old around can,t give them away if they are gas powred, I,m serious what ever they will weigh at the scrap yard and sometimes less. Saw a nice running ih 1700 GAS bring 1450.00 at auction last Sat never could get the 4 1500.00 bid. This part of the country just has to many of them setting around. And to the man,s answer not high if that is what he wants to spend but in some parts of the country way over priced..

For that kind of money you should be able to buy 3 of them!! Heck i just drove a c70 with a metal dump bed to the scrap heap last month, kinda felt bad it was a darn good truck yet. Just not worth much where im from, usually scrap price or lower. Keep looking.

Even if it was a c70 and in excellent shape it wouldn't bring over 2500 around here. If it don't bend in the middle the row croppers won't give it a 2nd look. I've got a '82 Ford with a 22' dump bed and low mile 3208 cat and a 10 speed. I've been asking $4000 and can't sell it. It's also got 8 nearly new 1100x22.5 radials. I guess I'll keep it.
