Well got one and it has not opened up its den holes in 24 hours. The one under the house on the other hand is back into the garden caught it dead to rights in the tomato's but did not have the gun in hand. Will keep a better eye out and if all goes well may have oven barbecued groundhog as revenge. Yep got a recipe for that and maybe if I can get it before it ducks into its den and have the boy clean it I will cook it LOL

Old,The first day I met my wife I went to her house and her sister had a plate of fried groundhog,I asked them if I could try it and end up eating the whole thing

If you can just get them away from your house/garden and let a couple live/reproduce, the little ones are much better eating....

Have one or two under the concrete slab in the ole milk barn area, come and get them.

Old, I use a smoke- gas bomb that I get from the local farm-home store. Lite it and throwit down the hole and close hole watch which of the othe holes the smoke comes out and clse them.

As for as eating fried ground hog, it needs to be a young one, good eating. The old ones are tough and strong tasting

You'll get him, seeing your home enough which I assume, being so dry, he will be out, tell you what, the high octane I dosed the 3 dens near the house with, still have lids on them and have no activity, meaning they have not dug around or moved the lid. Hopefully they went to the big sleep and I can fill in these holes, the scent of them ought to keep others from re-using the holes, had to be the quickest and easiest way I have ever put a dent in em. When you think about it, all these darned critters/mother nature, it sure is no joke, even to us, always an uphill battle with all these darned annoying rodents around, competing for food, and it damn near never ends either !

Fenced off my garden and I did not plant as much, another story and something nipped all the buds of the cucumbers, man you just can't win LOL !!!!

Our Chow dog was barking like crazy this morning out where my wife's Earth boxes are located. She was after something and all you could hear was a chirp every now and then. When my wife came out she got the dog into the house then I could see it was ground hog. The dog couldn't get ahold of it being under one of the Earth boxes. Had to use a water hose to run him out. I wanted to shoot it, but she didn't want me to shoot it. Hal

Let us know how it tastes, and the recipe you use. I let the dogs have them if they kill them, kind of a reward. The ones I shoot, they end up eating too.

One of these days, I"ll get one for myself.

It made a small mistake this morning and lead me to its back door which I filled in with a big rock as in half the size of a 5 gal bucket. I have been letting the weeds grow up close to the house between the garden and the house and will be mowing them down later today so as to be able to make him a bit easier target. The way my garden is a fence would be to much of a pain in the back sides plus this thing gives me target practice

I would term them closer to the Rabbit or squirrel family since they are veggie eaters not a animal that will pretty much eat any thing. Now rat or coon or opossum that would be a different story

A rabbit and squirrel are both in the rodent family also.
Any thing that has 2 upper front teeth that grow the entire life and only get worn down from gnawing is part of the rodent family.

But I understand your point of veggie eaters against meat eaters.
You might also try nutria rat. They are veggie eaters.
