FOOD ALLERGIES

Anyone besides me have one or more food allergies? I had a reminder today that I am allergict to peanuts (in any form). Just a minor exposure/reaction this time, controlled by Bendadryl. Funny thing for as common as this allergy supposedly is, I am yet to meet anyone else who has it.

Meet me, I have the same thing. Had it since a kid. I don't think I get as sick as you though, at least not anymore but I understand it will get worse as I get older.
Funny thing, the smell of any kind of nuts including peanuts does not bother me at all, but I can smell a jar of peanut butter 50 feet away and I swear I'm going to have an asthma attack from the odor.
I was found to be allergic to many differnt things as a kid, but most don't bother me anymore. Never could have a pet as a child, nor could I mow grass etc. Now I have animals everywhere and mow several acres a week with only sinus issues that is put at bay with over the counter pills.
So were you also allergic to peanuts as a child? I had strawberry jam sandwiches in my lunch box all through my school years while all my friends had PBandJ.

One of the kids in our 4-H kids is allergic to peanuts, dairy, wheat, cheese, You name it... Bet cooking at her house is interesting.

My nephew has an allergy to shell fish - he breaks out just talking about shell fish. I'm in the food industry and controlling allergens is a major food safety issue. Lots of rules around storage, labeling and clean up. I know of some companies that won't even let a peanut product be in the candy machine.

I am now allergic to peanut butter and peanut oil. About 10 years now(I'm 49). I ate gallons of the stuff when I was a kid. No problem. So, I have no clue what happened. I'm thinking peanut butter changed somehow.

Hope you have been tested for it and have an Epi-pen prescribed (prescription filled and on hand)... because if may save your life if you have a severe reaction.

Girl I went to school with had a peanut allergy so severe that she could not go in the lunchroom on the day we had peanutbutter sandwiches. They also asked those of us in her classroom to refrain from eating peanut butter.

Yep I can not eat any melon in any form and also can not eat Lima beans. If I want to puke all I have to do is get to close to the smell of most melons for very long at all. To eat them I can figure to be over the throne head first in less then 15 minutes and that is if I get lucky

I think northvale-PA may be on the right track. Real, old fashioned peanut butter separates from the oil and has to be stirred each time it is used. But most if the major brands today take the peanut oil out, add two or three other kinds of vegetable oil, add sugar and heaven only knows what some of that other stuff in there is. So it could well be that altering the peanuts in the process would cause problems with some peoplle.

Neighbor's kid is highly allergic to peanuts. We have to watch it at VBS and Youth Group for refreshments or meals.
Me, I'm just moderately allergic to beef and I still raise a few head!! Probably had it since 1989, think I figured what it was by 1995, blood test diagnosed in 2003, and finally found an explanation in articles from U of Virginia Allergy Center 2007 research found in 2011!! Connected to severe reaction to tick bites (Texas Lone Star tick, some say), (I had a bad case of tick bites in August 1988) sets up an allergen in the gut tied to a sugar and 3-6 hours after ingesting red meat (beef for me, pork or/and lamb for others) and a severe case of hives (or worse) shows up. Thankfully since 2003, no midnight runs to the ER!

Marilyn has celiacs, meaning no gluten. It's becoming a very common malady today. She can't even eat non-gluten grain products that have been processed in the same building as wheat or barley. A corn taco might be contaminated with wheat or barley dust. If meat in the restaurant is marinated it has gluten in it, guaranteed. She's reacted to non-gluten restaurant food that's fried on the same grill as food containing gluten. Makes eating out a real pain because just about everything we eat has gluten in it. She can't touch eggs either, so if she has a salad, it can't have eggs and the only dressing she can have is vinegarette. All other salad dressings have gluten. When we travel she has her stash of non-gluten food with her.

She had experimented with non-gluten cooking from recipies other celiacs sufferers have shared with her and she's getting pretty good at it. This evening we had fried zucchini with mozzarella cheese, topped with crumbled hamburger with a touch of onion and it was darned good. Come to think of it, I eat pretty much gluten free because she's the cook and we don't eat out much.Jim

Came home from work one day and ate some cherries from the tree in my back yard. Throat immediately closed up. Had to drink a gallon of water to keep it open. Later that night had a salad with dinner and same thing happened. Was not able to eat fresh fruit, veggies or nuts for the longest. Am just now becoming able to eat fresh veggies without a bad reaction. Don't know what happened just did and I have compensated.

I used to have really bad reactions to different foods. My mom kept a log and really through the pediatrician for a loop. She started figuring out the common ingredients that some of the foods had. Hot dogs were one. Their preservative nitrate or nitrite would really mess me up. Some of the food colorings in other things would do the same thing. I remember Red #40, Yellow #5 being a couple I had to watch out for.
But, the one thing I was really allergic to was milk. It didn't do anything to my stomach, but still to this day will clog up my sinuses and give me a sore throat. I have to watch how much I take in now. It sure is hard to resist chocolate milk and sometimes I'll drink it and regret it later.

I had severe headaches for years from I was 11 onwards , usually happened 3-4 times a day and wakened me out of my sleep at nights, they left my stomach sick and I was very thin. Went on a 2 week holiday when I was 20 and had no headaches, but just 2 days after getting home they came back, every year was the same no headaches on hols but all the time at home. Finally married a nurse and she made me go get a food allergy test done.... reaction to oats and I started eating porridge for breakfast when I was 11! On hols I eat a fry every morning. now I can't touch oats, even baling oat straw gives me the pain.

Having Food allergies suck but......There is a book that your fellas need to read.
It is called "Eat right 4 your type" There are 4 blood types and this book gives you info on what type of foods you need to eat for your blood type. back in the late 90s I was getting sick all the time and I didnt know why, my dad found this book and I changed my diet and I am way better now.
The main thing for me is cutting out dairy, drinking Pineapple juice at least once per day, no eggs. The pineapple juice has an ingredient in it that neutralizes bile from your liver. (a big help for me)
My quality of life improved due to making diet changes. I thank God I dont have that peanut allergy or Gluten allergy.

I have Celiacs Disease. Allergic to Gluten.
Think about that..no bread, no cakes, pies, crackers, breaded foods etc etc etc.

One must become a food expert to get by. Haven't eaten a sandwich nor a donut in 18 years.

I've lived on a gluten free diet since 1995.
Makes a real difference in how I feel.

Allergic to caffiene, I guess, because a couple of glasses of sweet tea, which I love, makes me feel all tense. I don't have a problem with coffee since I don't drink coffee, don't like the taste.

I Love strong black coffee.... The decaf here is pretty good. A cup of normal coffee just wears me out.... Tea, coke, anything else is fine. Just the caffiene in coffee I guess.....

Strange one I have. Used to drink 32 oounce diet pop in one sitting. When finished, could not talk coherently. Finally got smart no more diet pop at all. Allergist said no BROWN pop at all. Dave

I had allergy tests about 35 years ago and found I had quite a few. But the worst food allergy I had was to peanuts...and I had been eating a 2 pound jar of peanut butter a month. It had been so easy to fix a PBJ sandwich when I didn"t feel good, and that was exactly the wrong thing for me to do.

I quit eating peanuts in any form and felt better. I have heard that sometimes allergies can go away after a long time, but I think I am still allergic to peanuts, since sometimes I get all stuffed up after eating fried foods. I suspect that those foods are fried in peanut oil.

Some allergies are very unpredictable. Sometimes they can have much more serious symptoms suddenly. While Benedryl is usually effective in reducing symptoms, with a really bad reaction, having and using an epi-pen can be a lifesaver. My wife is deathly allergic to bee or wasp stings, so she carries an epi-pen in her purse at all times. We only ever had to use an epi-pen once, but it might have saved her life. It got us time to get her to the ER.

Good luck with your allergies. Avoiding peanuts is usually pretty possible. I still love the odor of peanut butter, but I never taste it. And if I decide there are peanuts in something I have taken a bite of, I spit out that bite. Works OK for me.

Glad to hear iam not the only one allergict to peanuts. Have been since a baby. Avoidance is best but do get exposure from time to time. I keep Benadryl liquid and and Epipen handy. Never had to use the pen and hope to never need it. I do check the date and keep it current. My minor reaction friday was from work. I am training for a different position in my company and the guy I am taking over from loves peanuts. He had eaten a big handful of them shortly before siting with me at my computer. That was all it took. He knew Iwas allergict but had no idea it was that bad. I don't blame him at all, it just happened.

I'm gettin this picture...............

IMO there is nuttin wrong with the food,it doesn't cause allergies.60 years ago these allergie things were almost unheard off.(hay fever was the only one i heard of back then)
It's the widespread chemicals and sprays they use on the farm and in food processing nowadays that causes the mayhem.
I have no problem eating home grown and prepared bison/beef burgers, yet a burger from any fast food joint i puked in the gutter within 10 min of eating the filty crap.
