Oliver vs Fordson

Anyone have opinions on quality of Oliver 770 vs Fordson Super Major tractors. Oliver is a gas-- Fordson is diesel. Which one would have a chance of running a small round baler. Are parts on the Fordson hard to find/ expensive? Fuel useage-- reliability?

No comparison. The Oliver hands down going away. I'm having trouble even coming up with an anology to compare the two. A Cadillac and a Model T maybe. The difference between having a tractor and walking behind a mule.

If the Caddie and Model T were the same year, I would take the Model T. Simple to work on.
I would go with the Ollie if I were you.

Well since you asked a similar question down a bit here is what I found out over the years of baling hay. As I said down there I have an Oliver 77 that I tried to bale with. I also have a Ford 841. The Oliver 77 is around 38HP the Fordson Major is around 38HP and the Ford 841 around 45HP as per the Neb test list. I found that hand down no matter what or where the Oliver 77 will pull circle around my 841 and my 841 I also know has a newer engine then the Oliver does I.E. engine was rebuilt on the ford in the mid 80s the Oliver been a lot longer ago then that

I would like to argue about the Fordson -- We had two of the Fordson Diesels. Pulled one ways- 18ft- Hoeme and tool bars -- They run good
Except for the time that the hired man came walking to the house - said the tractor got hot and quit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Duhhhhhhh -- did with out a hired man for a while then
For us they were good tractors - both diesel - and took care of our needs --- we farmed both dryland and irrigated-- so it was versatile

They are both good tractors. The fordson should be 30-35hp but the torque is incredible. I would look at the lugging power and the cost of opperation for a 8hr day. Fordson parts not that bad to get, there are still a bunch in england and canada.

I would like to add to my comments above.
I have both an Oliver 77 and an 88. I am NOT farming anymore and both Of these I use for tractor pulling -- basically stock tractors.
Both of them work good and it seems like I always place in the top end of the classes.
I am happy with the Olivers -- Did NOT farm with the Olivers and they are Gas and the Fords were Diesel - so may be and unfair comparison
