Fear of Snakes Revisited

You may remember that I posted a while back about my fear of snakes and wanting to get over it. Well, i kept telling myself that the fear is unreasonable since we have no poisonous ones in our area. The other day I was walking in a nearby state park as usually when a lady asked me what to do about a snake that was bothering her as she fished along the river bank. It seems she had moved further down the bank twice to get away from it but it follwed her both times. I walked up to within a couple feet of what was more than a 3 footer. After the snake and I looked each other over a bit, I asked the lady to move back from the bank a bit, then I stomped and moved closer to the snake. It took off along the back past where the lady had been with me in persuit....of the snake, not the lady. Snakes must not be very inteligent because Ithink it just wanted to go past and was not smart enough to go around. Interesting that a snakes scales make kind of a singing sound like file when they go fast in dry grass. Anyway, I am proud that I did not do the screaming little girl dance or panic at the sight of a snake.

Something is hard-wired to make us dislike snakes. I leave them alone unless they're in or close to the house, then they get moved out to the field.

As Tom said - I leave them alone unless they're in or close to the house, then I send to another world. No way are they going to return.
It's against the law to relocate any wildlife in most areas.

I also had a fear so I desided every one I seen I was going to pick it up,after a dozen snakes and a lot of bites you relize they wont hurt you

And if the snake had turned and did this what would you have done????????

In Arkansas we have every poisonous snake indigenous to the US except the coral snake. You learn early to identify most snakes. Most snakes will avoid a human when possible so I guess stomping might work for most but I sure wouldn't want to try that with a cotton mouth.

Why, i'd of shoved my wooden leg out in front of me and let him have it. He'd never try to bite me again! Ya think? RJ

My worst fear I would say is wasps. Been seeing lots of them lately, and I hate being surprised when I open up a guard or sheild on a peice of equipment and find a nest. I was at a local dealer looking at choppers and found a fair sized nest on the cutter head on one. I didn't see it right away but then they started getting mad at who turned their home upside down. I ran and never went back to shut it.

I found a few nests around the farm in pipe and tubing and happened to have the spray with me that I use on the fruit trees for bugs. They got a abundant dose from a safe distance after I pumped it up some.

This time of year or a little later is coming up on mating season for many species of snakes. They can be very aggressive because of this. If one is seen in the grass there may be a second one you don't see. I would be very careful about trying to bluff one with a stomp especially if i was unknowingly between it and its mate (who could be well hidden in grass! )Their behavior can change rapidly during this time.

Wife called the other day on the cell phone screaming and and said there was a big snake up on the Purple Martin house. When I got to the house I quess he got his belly full and come down. It was so full it could not travel very fast so I got him. It was a 58 inch long rat snake. That steel pipe about 12 feet in the air did not stop it from climbing. Don't usually kill snakes like that, but it got in my space. By the size, probably was not the first year it did this.

I guess living in Georgia we have 5 of the most poisionous snakes in the USA. We have copperheads and water moccasins in my area.

snakes in a lake often become conditioned to fishermen.the reason is because of the bait and captive fish on a stringer etc.they just become used to a easy meal.they know most folks throw dead minnows away or have fish.dont think for a instant all snakes will run from you though, most will but stomping your feet waving your arms etc often triggers a defensive bite.also remember a snake doesnt have to be poisonous to kill you, their saliva can be just as deadly if you have a severe infection from it.best bet is to simply leave them be,but if you do have this problem again, the way to stop it is to keep your fish and bait in a cooler.fish are better eating anyway if you throw them on ice as soon as caught.once the snake finds no meal he will move off and bother the next guy.
