I was jump starting my 56 ford 640 and hooked up the cables wrong which fried my bat. Igot a new bat. which started the tractor. but when you throttle up the tractor it throws off the fan belt and the gen continues to spin and run on bat. power as a motor until you unhook the bat. Any thoughts or ideas?

Ive heard i need to polarize it which i did but i want to know if i need to do anything else or check anything else before starting again?

A DC motor and Generator are basically the same thing.......Spin them they produce electricity but apply electricity then spin...

Rich has ya covered,,,,,,,,if the cutout relay is stuck closed youre applying DC battery voltage so they spin like the motor they are. Polarizing wont fix that problem, the voltage regulator/cutout relay needs fixed or replaced

Probably nothing wrong with either the generator or regulator.

It is not unusual for a regulator relay to stay closed and continue to spin the generator if the belt flies off. Just stop the generator from spinning. if it restarts then the regulator is faulty. If the relay open when the generator is stopped then everything should be alright.
