Side dressing corn in a drought

Applied a little more than half my recommended nitrogen along with my other fertilize this spring. I put down ammonium nitrate for the nitrogen. I was going to side dress with liquid nitrogen between the rows but we havent gotten a good long rain for at least a month. Im thinking on just holding onto my money and not side dressing because there is really no moisture to speak of. What would you guys do??

My neighbor did full side dressing in east central Indiana and now regrets it from the drought. Corn is burning up.

I suspect it would be a waste of money.

At this point, what is your best possible yield outcome? 1/2 half of expected??? 1/2 the N recommendation would cover that.

2 days ago we were starting to show some serious stress, had almost 2 inches in the last 36 hours. I have 6-8 foot corn when Knee high is the norm, and adequate moisture for now. I feel blessed.

It's so dry here I'm not putting any more money in it until it rains a lot. 5 days of 100 degrees will finish off some of it and I won't have to worry about it anyway. My 2 cents. You have crop insurance?

What growth stage is your corn in? Here in NE Indiana most preapply anhydrous before planting or side dress with 28% or anhydrous before the corn is 18" high.

I haven't seen any activity in NE IN. Lotsa irrigation but even the light ground is struggling. I wouln't waste the money at this point.

is your corn still short enough? it could be this year i guess. i've never seen side dressing this late in the season around here. i guess you could dribble some on with a rogator or such. like others said, if you think it's already damaged some, then i wouldn't.

Are you dribbling or knifing/rolling it in? If you are dribbling, it will all be lost without moisture to take it down. It's a tough call to decided to possibly limit your yield potential by holding the food away from the plant, but on the other side of things, if the plant can't drink it isn't going to eat. Jim

curious as to why you used this form of nitrogen also. is this just a small plot maybe? the only thing i ever used it for was for mixing in with my herbicide. not being critical, i'm no agronomist. from what i understand, you'll have to keep a better eye on your ph levels now.
