electric motor question

OK, for you electrical guys. Brother has a motor on a pit scraper that runs forward and reverse with an external manually operated switch.Motor runs fine one direction and just hums or goes real slow other direction. He called electric motor shop and they said the problem would be in switch not motor. Can anyone tell me how you would test this? Both switch and motor are only about 1 1/2 years old. It is wired for 230 volts.

Rewire it so the switch is opposite of what it was before (forwards is backwards and backwards is forward)and see if it works the same as now or opposite of now- or grab a VOM and check continuity through the switch. If he's really lucky it might be a double pole double throw switch and he could wire onto the other set of contacts.

If it's single phase. The motor has to come to a complete halt before reversing.
Does sound like a contact problem in the switch.
Is the drive more difficult to move in one direction than the other?

Its probally a drum switch that has rotating contacts, and it switches 2 wires making it go in either direction, there is usally a lot of conections in this switch and one has probally come loose, jimmy

The problem could be an internal wiring problem with the motor but more than likely it is with the switch. While testing the switch I would disconnect the motor marking which wire goes where. It sounds to me like with one direction you are getting 230 volts and when you reverse the switch on leg is dead and you are only getting 120 volts. With a volt meter you can test each wire and see if you are getting power on each line. If it turns out one leg is really dead try to find a replacement switch that is the same model to make it easier to change out.
