Batteries blowing water through caps

I have two 6V batteries that have been pushing acid out through the caps for the last 5 years. There's ALWAYS a puddle on top of each battery.

People tell me this is because the batteries were overcharged. They have NEVER been overcharged. I have been extremely careful about that. I keep them on a quality battery maintainer any time they are not in use.

This spring I took them off the maintainer and they were low on water. I filled them but most of the cells were dead, so I took them out and used other batteries I had on hand.

After sitting on the floor of my garage overnight, there is a PUDDLE on top of each battery again! They are not being charged. They are not connected to anything.

I'm getting rid of them but I really want to know what's going on here.

That problem is why I hate 6 volt batteries !! How old are they ? I could never get them to last very long either. our crawler they would not work right after 3 years. It was a hard starter. I could get a few more years out of them after that in another machine.
Very seldom did I ever get any that stayed dry and didn't corrode everything up or last. I figured the 12 volts got upgraded vents and cases but the 6 volts didn't because of the low volume made ? Optima makes a 6 volt but I am too cheap to buy one for now.

the only time ive seen that is a bad voltage regulator letting the alternator run constantly.
but puddle while sitting unhooked? maybe a chemical reaction going on. read my post down below.

The batteries are 6 years old now.

They're not overfilled. After I topped them off about 5 years ago, I haven't added any water until just the other day.

They were still pushing water even though the level was almost down to the plates.

They've never been overcharged. I only ever charge them with a computerized battery charger and I use a quality battery maintainer during the winter months.

Hello mkirsch,
Even though you have filled the cells to the proper level, when the battery is charging the electrolyte will expand. So take some of the electrolyte out of each cell, end of problem. As long as a cell has electrolyte above the plates it will charge up O.K.. Charging at a lower rate will also minimize electrolyte migration.

Sound like someone is adding acid not water and they
cooking out the excess hydrogen gas. Watch if you see
bubbles while charging that is a symptom of to much acid or
over charging.

Ps don't light your cigarette while it's doing this. Boom

When a battery is sulfated bridging the plates either through or around the edge of the plate they self discharge and push out electrolyte sometimes in quantity. Be careful that Juice is potent acid.
Put baking soda on the top as a sprinkle before transporting them. Jim

What are the batteries used in? Does the machine charge them or are these deep cycle's that are only charged on a specific charger?
