got this old grill for free,the tenants in one of the houses where I worked left it behind ,the owner of the house said get rid of it, I will try it out,maybe I wont build the block fire pit I was thinking of,It has a smoker on the side of it too,

Looks like it has an emblem with the state of Texas on it. If so, I think James and Nancy need to drive up and help you test it out!

that is exactly what I use for my smoked summer sausage - they are a great smoker! I put an aftermarket temp gauge in mine.
 
That's a nice unit, clean it up paint it an replace the wood then tell everyone you just bought for $250.00

Those are neat. I almost bought one but I can't sit there and tend a charcoal fire for 10 hours straight. Went with a propane-powered smoker.

The thing on the side is the firebox. You put the meat in the big part and set a fire in the firebox when you want to smoke something. Indirect heat.

I think the firebox also doubles as a portable grill for camping. See if it's detachable.
 
The legs appear to be the weakest link of the whole unit. I'd think about removing the legs and build your rock pit that would "house" this unit. That would be a safer alternative to an open pit. With your "rock stacking" skills, I'd think it would be a nice project.
 
just remember ( I know from experience)if your smoking youll have to keep it out of the wind to keep heat anywhere near even.Either leave the wheels on so you can move it out of the wind,or build it in with a windbreak that moves, maybe on a swivel so you can block the wind. thats the reason all buisnesses and old farmsteads have smoke houses. you can grill on it with direct heat ,but when you build a fire in the firebox to slow smoke something youll soon see what i mean.
