Allis Chalmers G temperature gauge

Allis Chalmers "G" tractors came from the factory without a temperature gauge. Is there a way to hook up a temp. gauge to one. I was wondering about drilling and tapping the bottom piece that is mounted to the engine block where the hose connects and running a line from there. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

The part I was refering to at the bottom of the engine where the radiator hose connects is the engine block inlet which is cast iron. This may be where the thermostat is mounted inside. I have not messed with it.

The place for the hottest water will be at the top of the radiator area. Thermosphion systems cool and the coolant goes to the bottom cooler than the top. Put a fitting in the top radiator hose would be a good place.

Joe - The Allis G does not have a thermostat (you will find nothing inside the block water inlet). It's also the COOLEST part of the cooling system. Unless the engine is heavily loaded a temperature gage here will read only a few degrees above ambient. Nor will it indicate overheating should the system run low on coolant.

Best (and easiest) location for a temp gage bulb would be in the upper radiator hose just above the engine water outlet. It's also the hottest part of the system - it will most accurately reflect internal engine temperature.

Airplane piston engines have a Thermocouple
ring that goes under a spark plug ! It looks
like a copper plug gasket, and has a lead, to the
gauge, coming from it.
