my uncle and my aunt who is my moms twin sister ,live in a nursing home in PA, My wife and I went to see them two weeks ago. He had cancer,my aunt can hardly see. We had a nice visit with them, during the visit, uncle Horace asked me if I had any magazines about tractors and or farming. I said I will bring you some, next time I come visit. I didnt think much about it,because uncle Horace was never a farmer.or tractor man. I did put some magazines in the truck, and I didnt get back for one week,I was tired and dirty when I drove past the exit to the nursing home, last monday uncle Horace called to say my aunt broke her leg and was in rehab. My wife answerd the phone,he gave her the bad news, then asked for me. He said I thought you were going to bring me the magazines? I said I will be there thursday for sure. He said good, see you thursday, I oollected up a few recent Lancaster newspapers,a tractor magazine, and a bunch of backwoods magazines, and took them thursday, still didnt understand his wanting them, I went in his room,he was doing his breathing mask treatment, but was very alert, I talked with him quite a while ,then said I brought your magazines,He said oh,thanks, they are for my friend Ben,he had to sell his farm, and misses it,I know he will like reading those, so I went out in the lunchroom, asked for Ben and he came into my uncles room, Uncle Horace pointed to the magazines and papers,Ben grabbed the Lancaster farm newspaper and said I used to get this! I like reading what auctions are going on. Then he opened the tractor magazine and said theres a Farmall! I asked him what kind of tractors he had,he told me he started out with an H,told me how they were a great tractor, and farmers worked the heck out of them until the bigger tractors like the M came out, Then he told me about a kit he put on the H to raise the horsepower,he said what a difference it made,I couldnt make it to the top of one of my hills in high gear,he said with the kit it went right up ,Ben talked with us quite a while. When I left ,uncle Horace took off his breathing mask and said thanks a million. ,,,,,,,,, I just got a call from my cousin ,,,,,,,,, Uncle Horace passed away last night

Good thing you did, we never know when we will see someone for last time. Ben was his friend and you made his day also. World needs more people who will take a little time out to talk to older generation!

my uncle really was a great guy,I told that story to show that with all his problems,he still did what he could do to help his friend, When I was about 14, my uncle Horace and aunt Ethel took me along on their vacation and we went to Canada,he was a kind person, He could walk up to any dog and pet him,he just had a kind way about him,I will miss him greatly

Larry sorry to hear about your Uncle. we hate to loose anyone but we know that they are in a much better place . Tel your Aunt that were sorry for her loss.

So sorry for your loss. Also for your aunt - I'm sure she will miss him being in the nursing home with her.

I also had a favorite uncle, my mom's twin brother. He too farmed with a Farmall H that his father, my grandfather, bought new in 1942 and that I now own. Such great memories of him, his philosphy and work ethic, and running grandpa's old H as a kid. There were so many guys that started farming with an H, or an Allis WC like another uncle, or an International 10-20 like my cousin, or an Allis B like my Dad. They were part of an era that won't be duplicated.

Its funny how that works sometimes...
The whole family on my wifes side got together a few months back. First time in years. A month later they find out grandma has brain cancer and only 6 months to live...That was the one last big get together that everyone will remember...

Says a lot for a man that any old dog would trust. In my opinion dogs are better judges of people than people are. Sorry for the loss of your Uncle, and I can only hope that someone will say that nice of things about me when I'm gone.

Larry, SO sorry for your and your aunts loss. Condolences for the whole family and friends of your uncle. Sounded like a real gentleman. From what I read on these panels, i think a lot of his traits was passed on to you. I always enjoy your messages and pics. Good Luck

Sorry for your loss Larry.
I'm so glad you made it there.
Helping him help someone else may have given him quite a lift in spirit.

So sorry for your loss... but, you know, Ben is still there... just waiting for some more magazines and what-not... Is there a computer they can use? Tell him about this forum...

Sorry for your loss, Larry. Sounds like he was a "favorite Uncle". I had one, Mom's baby brother. Sometimes I still catch myself wanting to pick up the phone and call him.

Sorry for your Loss of a great sounding uncle. Prayers for comfort at this unpleasant time, for you, and all family involved.

My favorite Uncle past a few years ago. He was not a Farmer but grew up on one. He had a long decorated Career in the Army..He did two tours in Korea and two in Viet Nam.There are lots of stories that I would like to share about Him but I don't think most would believe. I will tell this. He was General Westmoreland's helicopter pilot. Years ago Mom and Dad were on a flight back to Charleston. Dad thought the Man across the isle looked familiar but could not place where he knew him. So Dad introduced himself and asked where they may have met. The General told him who he was. So Dad says you don't know me but you know My brother Lou Berry. Without a flinch the General said "He was the best damn pilot the Army ever had". My Uncle was not only my hero he was my friend.
