JD 520 won't stay running

I have an old 2 cyl. JD 520, that has been kept in very good shape. However, the other day my son ran out of gas while disking the garden. He added more gas, but it wouldn't start. It seemed hot - and there was a little smoke coming out of the left side - cover over flywheel/starter area. I let it cool down - now it starts right up - but shuts off as soon as I take my foot off of the starter pedal.
Any ideas?

NO JD 520 should EVER get (or be) OLD..!!
They are too nice to operate...if it IS "Old", it is time to make it "Young Again"...!!!
You need to see an Electric wiring Diagram to actually see and correct the problem..
There is a Resistor behind the instrument (Dash) that is to Reduce Operating Voltage to the ignition points (While Running)..AND:
A "Bypass" circuit that let's FULL Battery Voltage to the Ignition Points when then the Starter is engaged...
That is where your problem lies..
For TEMP. (Emergency), you can run a Jumper from the Battery, to the Coil..to get it to run and move it for repairs..just be SURE to Remove the Jumper when you turn the engine OFF...

Those old tractors have an automatic fuel shutoff in the sediment bowl apparatus. If you run them dry you must loosen the knurled nut on the top of the sediment bowl and hold it down for 30 seconds or so until the carb fills with gas. Your second problem sounds like the resistor has gone bad in the ignition circuit. I believe they start on 12 volts and run on 6 volts, they die after releasing the starter pedal because the ignition circuit is broken if the resistor is burned out. Joe

If it runs as long as the starter pedal is depressed but NOT when its released, the ignition ballast resistor located between the Ign switch and coil is bad/open or else the wiring is bad/open. The resistor should have continuity and be around 1.2 to 2 or so ohms, easy to check and replace. If it has the auto shut off fuel sediment bowl assembly and she runs out of gas loosen the top knurled nut and depress the plunger till the bowl fills with gas again.
