Hi I have a 48 styled John Deere d I was wondering if I could run diesel in the kerosine tank or a mixture of some kind it would run fine on gas but it burns a lot gas. Gas is expensive and I could run on desiel alot cheaper any suggestions?

Bought a 44A from an old gentleman once. He started it on gas, closed the radiator shutter and warmed it up to 200 degrees and then switched over to the main tank. 3/4 diesel and 1/4 gasolene. It ran very well on that mixture.

i dont think i would be adding more than 1/4 diesel as the unburned stuff just goes past the rings into the oil pan . thats why they always had to keep the oil petcocks drained to the proper level. thus also diluting the oil making it thinner. not a good thing. basically its just not practical.

Yes gas& diesel mix will work however the old D will burn more of the mix than gasoline plus the mix is more dangerous to handle than straight gasoline.

Gas is cheaper than off road diesel here,I have used kerosene in my JD H back when kerosene cost less thn gas.I see no atvantage, plus the stink is bad.

I have a 37 unstyled D. You can make a mixture of 1/2 no2 diesel And 1/2 gasoline this is almost like distillate. To use this mixture you will have to shut the shutters and get the temp up to 190+ degrees before switching fuels. You will also need to use the water injector under load to quite the knock it will have on this mixture. You will have to adjust the shutters to maintain the 190 to 200 degree temperature. It will smell worse than a diesel running on this mixture . Most of the time I run mine on gas.

A lot cheaper running on gas, desiel is about 50 cent a galon higher than gas. You will use more if you try that and that desiel will foul out the plugs just like burning any other oil from the engine.

Leroy They will not foul plugs as long as you keep the temperature where it belongs and run W-18 plugs in it.

The reason I asked I because I can get the diesel for little to no cost I was just wondering if it could run on a mixture of some kind. Thanks for all the replies!

Plowing, my friends 28 "D" works best 1gal diesel to 5 gal gas.Better power than straight gas.He has tried all diff. combo.

How much are you running this tractor that messing around with diesel is going to save you any significant $$$?

Remember the tractor isn't going to have the same efficiency as a true diesel. Gallons per hour wise, fuel economy should be comparable to gas.

Back in the day when you put hundreds of gallons of fuel through the tractor in a year, the cost difference was worth it. Nowadays you need to look at more than price per gallon.
