I needed a hydraulic filter for a john deere
forklift.I have an account at napa and get most of my parts there. They said the filter list for 140 bucks and they would sell it to me for 70.I
called John deere and the filter list for 49 bucks.I needed a master cylinder for a chevrolet grain truck.Napa wanted 250 for a new wagner one.I found one on ebay for 85 bucks still in the box.I bought a 12 volt flasher for my JD gator at napa.I probably could have bought one at any flea market for a couple bucks,it was 10.52.A friend said they were getting hard up and fleecing everyone they could. He said they look at the parts price in the book and add whatever they think the customer will pay.His son worked there one sommer and quit.I always got
good service, guess i'll have to start pricing everything from now on.

That's should be enough to make you skip napa all together....

Fell out with the local napa when I bought some things from them including an oil filter for a 140 IH. Didn't look at the statement until I got home. They had charged me 18 dollars for a distributor cap. Haven't been back there much since. Joe

Dave2 not all NAPA stores are company owened a lot of them are franchised. Do your NAPA stores give you a discount card? My card is a Ridge NAPA Auto Parts preferred customer card with an account number.

may just be that store cause in march i bought 2 fuel filters 2 oil filters and a hydraulic filter for my 806 for $36 during their filter sale.

We don't have napa stores..

but, if napa lets someone operate a business in their name, they should be watching for crooks... That preferred customer discount card they gave ya is just so you can show it and the clerks know you's a little wiser than most and to give you the closer to honest price, they'll get it back on the next unsuspecting customer.....
A crook is a crook...

Our NAPA store is expensive on slow moving parts but the quality is good. You can save time and money on the Internet if you have time to wait on delivery.

Dave I use NAPA a lot because they handle better quality filters than the two large major discount auto suppliers and just a few dollars over their prices. I had an oil dealer that I delivered into and he had a desplay of every major filter made . They took a band saw and cut them in half and all of the so called cheap filters are a waste of your money and you might as well not run a filter at all.

I checked with the local New Holland dealer for some wheel cylinders. He didn't have any but could order them for me,$121 each and I need four. Went to the local napa store and Nick ordered them for me, $35 each. I'm still with napa. Bud

Russ I use Wix, NAPA Gold and K&N on my trucks and car. I use Wix and Napa Gold on my garden tractors ( Briggs & Kohler engines). IH & Deere from dealer. I do not like Fram had problem with their filter. The company I drove for tried Fram for a while until they lost several IH DT-466's to filters falt and went back to Ih Fleetgaurd filters.

Had a bad experience with NAPA recently. Ordered a complete tune up kit for a AC 262 gas engine in a CII, got 3 new plugs, 2 used plugs, and one that wasn't labeled correctly. I will be looking for a new parts store before i visit NAPA again.

Sounds like your napa store is too trusting and does not check returned parts to see if a crooked customer is returning old parts in the new napa boxes..

The only thing I hate about the local NAPA stores are that on the receipt the item will list for some stupid amount and they sell it to you for one third to one half of that list price. It makes it look like you're getting a heckuva bargain when you aren't. That said, their prices are fair and comprable to other auto parts stores and 99% of the time the quality is as good or better than what can be found elsewhere. The local NAPA chain in my area from my experience has some of the best auto parts stores I've been to. Most of the counter guys like digging for that hard to find part or looking up ag stuff.

IMO, if it was an Echlin cap, it was well worth the money. It's twice the price, but it's twice the quality of cap, too.

Again, my opinion, but I feel NAPA/Echlin, Standard, and Blue Streak ignition parts are well worth the premium that that I pay for them. These are quality parts that fit and fucntion correctly.

I usually spend more time troubleshooting el-cheapo ignition parts then I spend in the tractor seat.

NAPA gold and Carquest are made by and the same filter as Wix, I buy all my filters in the bulk pack at there spring sale, really some good buys. I also WILL NOT EVER USE A FRAM FILTER, had one that the filter media came loose from the can once about twenty years ago.

my local napa is always very close to the online listed prices, they are not tacking on addition prices. Bill

The list price is a suggested retail price for a commercial customer, it just prints on all invoices, so for instance you pay $50 for a set a brake pads and the list price is $95. If you had gone to a shop to have them done the shop would have charged you the $95 for the same thing.

As far as the used plugs it's hard to tell, may have been in store mistake or something from another store that was returned to the warehouse then sold to them as new parts. We get some stuff from our warehouse that is terrible, try to weed out what you can but there isn't time to say for instance check every plug in a box.

I understand the frustration from both sides of the counter, I've had issues with stuff I bought, and sold...all I can say is it's hard to find good help. Auto parts don't pay worth a damn and it's alot of stress, I've never met a full time auto parts employee that didn't drink like a fish at home.

A NAPA dealer get it's pricing guidelines from NAPA.

They are:

1. dealer cost

2. whole sale (for mechanic shops)

3. average resale (what most walk in customers pay)

4. resale (what NAPA says they should sell for to the walk in customer)

5. List (what the mechanics are supposed to mark them up to when figuring out a repaid bill). You would have to see whole sale pricing compared to list....WOW!!!   That makes being a mechanic a legal means of stealing!

Now the dealer can sell at what ever price they want so it's the dealer not the NAPA Corp. Same thing with small engine parts, The maker sends out a price list telling the shop what they consider to be retail but the dealer is under no obligation to sell at those prices. My son needed a new carb for a Briggs engine. He was quoted $80. I called the place I buy from and picked it up for him......for $26.

NAPA gold series filters are WIX

NAPA Oil is Valvoline

Most internal and some ignition parts for Kohler engines are actually Kohler parts.

My youngest son ordered a tranny rebuild kit for a Chrysler 904A auto from NAPA today under my account.....83 dollars. They sell that kit at retail for 129 and average resale at 97.

I'm with you on the Echlin and Blue Streak ignition parts. They are the best out there.

If you change your oil too often, like I do between 3500 and 4000 miles, I think Frams, even their cheapest, are ok. My oil always comes out kind of pretty, like oil used to look new, kind of amberish. I've got 560k miles on my Chevy, still runs like a top, no smoke ever, and uses less that a 1/2 quart per change. Says a lot about modern engines and modern oils.

I've read quite a bit, and Frams seem to filter about as well as any, but they also seems to degrade if you leave them in too long. My truck tells me to change every 15,000 or so, but I just can't. I drive for a living so I'm changing every 2-3 weeks. Valvoline, or whatever decent stuff is on sale, and Fram seem to be working for me. I don't even know if they make tractor oil filters, I wouldn't put one in my tractor. Those don't get changed for years.

I know most all parts places have moved some production south but I have not darkened the door step of a Napa store since they moth balled at factory here 4 or 5 years ago.

It that were not enough to keep me out a typo in a Napa filter cross refernce book cost a good friend of mine $4,500 and three weeks of down time on his planter tractor this spring.
