I have 'nut grass' in my yard... Is there a herbicide that will kill the nut grass, but leave the zosia alone?

Way back when, Basagran.....even though it was primarily a broadleaf killer, usta be the chemical of choice for controlling nut grasses in soybeans; not familiar with zosia, but it shouldn't be much trouble to do an on-line search.

Best way to get rid of nut grass is to move. There is a good change you will severly damage or kill the lawn grass too.

GrazonNext will burn it, but don"t know if it actually kills it.

Surmount is pretty rough on nut grass, too.

Don"t know the effect of either on Zoisa.

If it's a restricted herbicide you need a private pesticide applicators permit to purchase it. To get the permit you go to classes and take a test. NOT fun!!! Or you can rub shoulders with someone who does have a permit and talk him/her into letting you use his/her number. Or you can nave it commercially applied. Lots of choices and none of them is easy or cheap! Jim

Eptam or sencor

Most likely hurt the grass and you need a permit

Anyone try roundup?

I think you'll have to sacrifice some lawn to get rid of it

Tough stuff

Just be glad it is just nutsedge and not bermuda:) I soo plugged a large area of my yard in Zoysia last spring. It is coming along quite well. I dont have a problem with nutsedge but do have a terrible problem with bermuda.

I'm not aware of a chemical that will kill nutsedge that wont injure the Zoysia. I think the best plan here is to apply chemical only to the nutsedge. It should be easy. The nutsedge grows much more quickly than the Zoysia. Let it get 3 or 4 inches taller than the Zoysia then use a sponge or sponge mop to apply a chemical such as Liberty only to the nutsedge. Liberty will only burn the zoysia that it touches. I reccomend using the Liberty (ignite) in at least half of full strength in your mop/sponge as you "wick" it on. Be careful to keep the mop damp enough to coat the nutsedge but not wet enough to drip on the Zoysia. Wear chemical resistant gloves. You can even dissolve a touch of Ammonium Sulfate in the water with your ignite to really "heat" things up. Your nutsedge will give up the ghost in 72 hours if the sun is out and the temps are warm.

If you grew up with soybeans before the days of roundup ready you likely had a wick bar. This is exactly the same idea as wicking Johnson Grass in soybeans.

Keep it mowed and a dry spell will kill the nutsedge.

It's a grass and will fill in the bare spots until it gets choked out.

I wish I had nutsedge in my lawn. Right now it's so dry I haven't mowed for 2 weeks and if it don't rain tonite it may all die.

You should see my corn and beans that I have $500 an acre invested in.

Hope you get the rain your area needs to save your crops.

Crazy what crop expense is these days. We have rented out our farmland for about the last 6 years. It sure is a relief to not worry about too much/too little rain, sunshine, etc. My husband works anywhere from 45-60 hours per week - and it just got to be too much.

"nut grass" isn't a grass at all, but a sedge. it is by far the most troublesome weed that i deal with in the vegetables. herbicides that i know of that will control it are

dual (metolachlor)
permit/sandea/profine (halosulfuron-methyl)
basagran (bentazon)

i've read that eptam (eptc) and sutan will also work, but never used them.

roundup will burn it back, but it will probably regrow. repeated applications?

i've seen 2,4-d make it look pretty sickly, not sure how reliable control would be with that.

i assume zosia is the lawn grass? never heard of it... but all these chemicals except the 2,4-d would put a hurtin on the lawn.

nutsedge's biggest weakness is that it doesn't compete well. so the best answer in a crop situation is a healthy, vigorous crop. nutsedge tends to be the weed that is the biggest problem when the easy to control weeds are killed and the crop hasn't shaded it out yet.

in a lawn... how about just keep mowing it like normal and let it be? it's green after all...

On your hands and knees, dig up what you see until you get the nut. It won't come back. Each time you see some, dig it up until you get it all. had to do this to garden, but lawn should be smaller area and easier to do. Good luck.

Outrider is a very good herbicide for nutsedge in my bermuda
hayfields. I don't know how it would affect zoysia, though. I
sprayed it in one of my hayfields and it totally killed the
nutsedge all the way to the nut. Round Up will burn the
nutsedge to the ground, but it will come right back. 2-4D will
also knock it back to give your hay time to grow. That
probably won't work on a yard, though.
I read somewhere that in surveys of extension agents,
nutsedge has been named as the world's worst weed.
