Herbicide Question

My corn is around 30" tall or a bit more; stalks 3/4" plus in diamiter. Plants are bright green. I rototilled between the rows, but have a lot of carpet weed in the row. I'm thinking of mixing a gallon hand sprayer with a weak 2-4-D solution. I think carpet weed kills quite easy. How much would you use in a gallon? Is it a good idea or should I just get out the hoe? Plot is about .4 acres.

Larry

It may be okay if you keep the spray low and off the leaves of the corn.

Full rate of 24D is 16 ounces to the acre. You don't want to use more than 6 ounces total on your .4 acres. 4 ounces or your patch may do it.

Everyone wants to know how much to mix per gallon of water. You have to know how much water per acre you are going to use before you can know usage per gallon.

But if your corn lays down flat don't blame me. It was your idea in the first place.

We used to spray field corn that size with 2-4D Amine using drops that kept the spray below the canopy of leaves. The spray should never get into the swirl or center of the plant. On a hot day we used 8oz. but the normal rate is 16oz. It's been a long time ago, but I think we used ten gallons or less of water per acre. It did make the corn brittle for a few days afterward and on rare occasions fields were snapped off in high winds.

Are you working with sweet corn? Sweet corn is more sensitive than field corn so you have to be extra careful not to get the spray on the corn plants. A couple of years ago I sprayed sweet corn with a hand sprayer below the canopy with a hand sprayer, like you plan to do, and it did make the corn sag and twist for awhile but in the end we had the best crop we had ever had. Spraying with a hand sprayer is not nearly as accurate rate-wise as using a big field sprayer so you have to be careful not to over-apply. Jim

Get out the hoe for that amount of corn or don't worry about the weeds...
If it was mine I WOULD NOT spray 24D at this stage. IIRC, it needs to be applied to corn by the 4 leaf stage or something like that. Even then injory will result.
The herbicide is apt to cause more loss at this point that the weed.

Why ? You stand a good chance of injuring the corn. Carpet weed id not taking anything substantial away from the corn. Harvest your crop then deal with the weeds. Proper pre-plant treatments next spring will make life easier.

I use it on my sweet corn sometimes with a hand sprayer about 3 ounces per 2 gallon. I don't get any on the corn plants other than the stalk at the base of the plant. The label will tell you how to mix in a hand sprayer and not to get any on the leafs. If you do it will probably just stunt the plant for a few days and it will come back. We use to spray our corn with it using drop nossels on our sprayer between the rows. This is just the way I do it and it has worked fine for me. Your circumstances may be different with different results.

Been years since I sprayed any but at that time it was not aproved on sweet corn, may be different now for some varieties. And what is carpet weed, never heard of it. 2-4-D does not work on any grasses.

I'm with RodInNS, for the amount of corn you have planted use a hoe. Hoe it once or possibly twice and you should be fine - especially when the weeds are just starting. Dad made the hoe my best friend when younger.

Think of it as helping the economy and hire someone for a few days. The fed's are really looking for any sign of hiring thay can - you added a job and could make the news - LOL.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll either forget the spray or get the hoe for the worst. This is field corn, not RR. I'm actually amazed at how well it is growing considering we've had so little rain. A guy down the road's corn looks a little taller but he also has a large pivot. Winter plans: study up on pre-emergents and RR corn. A grain elevator north of me sells small quantities for guys planting plots. I think a few places are missing out on some sales by not offering products to food plotters. It would help pay a bit of the overhead. I've bought millet, peas, cowpeas, clovers, sorghum, buckwheat and corn.

As Gary says, you want to apply 6 oz to your whole .4 acre field of field corn. You are safe spraying the lower stalk of the corn, you do not want to get any into the growing point or upper whorls (leaf collars) as the 24D will stunt the growing point or make the corn brittle in the leaf collars.

But there is no problem spraying around the stalk of a corn plant with 24D.

This will kill or stunt all the broadleaf weeds. It will not do anything to any grasses you may have in the field.

Should work great.

It was very very common in years gone by to go in tall coren with a 'highboy' sprayer and drop nozzles (a short hose with the spray nozzle on the end, so the spray tip was down between the corn rows), spray the broadleaf weeds with 24D later in the season. Doesn't hurt the corn if you keep the spray off the top part of the plant.

1 pint to the acre. So we use to use 15 gallons of mix per acre.

so, that would work out to 1/2 pint to 7.5 gallons

1/4 pint to 3.75 gallons.

How big is your sprayer?

1/8 pt to 1.9 gallons ( say two gallons)

So 1/8 pint is 16 ounces divided by 8 = 2 ounces in 2 gallons of water.

That ought to be about the right strength.
