What was he doing?

We have a big time vegtable grower about hour from here. I just happen to be doing a job over that way and was parked along the road waiting for a phone call. They were running a couple row tillers (6-7 tillers mounted on a tool bar with space between for the crop) when I noticed a fell'a with a brush hog / mower clipping the tops of the rows in another patch. Wasn't cutting it down just clipping the tops off.

Was this to prevent the vegies from bolting (going to seed) or just weed control? No idea what was in the field but it looked like a leaf vegie.

Probably renovating strawberry fields. When the crop is off, you mow off the foliage (but stay above the crowns), fertilize, add weed control and rototill them back into rows.

Ideally, you rototill out the old rows and make new ones with the runners that have spread out between the rows.

In the fall, you mulch the new rows, usually with straw and then in the spring, rake it off between the rows so the pickers have a somewhat dry place to walk.

I raised strawberries for about ten years.
