Went to the lake rant

Went camping at the lake this weekend and had a good time except for the idiot boaters. Most were curtious but there is always a bunch that don't care. Guess I forgot it was thir lake! Dinguss on a pontoon comes 10 yards away full speed and we had a kid getting ready to wakeboard, scared her so bad she give up. Ski boats buzzing in and out of fishing boats ticking them off. I go out in the middle of the lake all by myself and here comes a fat kid on a jet ski circling our boat,(my guess looking for skin) and proceeds to go after any boat coming near to jump wakes witch is illeagal. Just plain stupidity! Common sense is gone I guess.

LOL! My boys tell me to get a paintball gun and shoot the. They said to make it a good one so they fall off and wash away the evidence!

We get the same thing here in the Land of 1,000,000,000,000,000 sketters......er 10,000 lakes. My thinking is they should change the name on one of the larger lake to Idiot's Lake and make em all go there. Here we even get people fishing that will buzz close by another boat of people fishing at full speed just going to and from their hot spot. Then too the jet skis, power boaters and so on. Or else it's a bunch on a pontoon that's so over loaded that the top of the deck is a whole 2-3 inches above the water.

That sounds very frustrating. Around here it's the same way but
when I go to the Adirondacks and camp for a week in August there
are a lot of lakes in which motorboats of any kind are prohibited, so
they are very peaceful. It's been my experience that the harder a
lake is to get to, especially if it is a mile or more from the trailhead,
the more likely the yahoos are not to go to it.

This has been a problem (speed boats vs fishing boats) for 50+ years. The only solution I see is making some lakes (or parts of a lake) off limits for speed boats.
I have heard both sides of this one.

In my younger days i worked rotating shifts and thus had off
days through the week, therefore there where fewer people
on the lake during that time. That changed to straight days
with saturday and sunday off. And thus the lakes where
covered up. I to tried the casting at the offending boaters
then decidied it wasn't worth it. Sold the boat, bought a
tractor, no more intruders. That was 25 years ago.

thats why i dont go to the bigger lakes anymore, sold my big boats and just go to the smaller no wake or electric power only ones. I still have a place down at eufala, and i used to hate it when they would put on a big bass tournament.would be a bass boat zipping in and out of every cove.

Except there are NUTS out there who might shoot back with real guns. And get away with it because you shot at them first.

Real bad idea, IMHO. Good luck!

Where can you go or what can you do that doesn't have a few inconsiderate individuals around spreading discontent? It would be interesting to see what effect unmarked lake patrol boats or unmarked police cars would have on the problem if they issued tickets citing for reckless operation which carries penalties closer to D.U.I. than speeding or failure to yeild. Point is that tailgating,no passing zone and other aggressive actions are more serious than speeding or running a stop sighn simply because it isn't done mistackenly. Texas boaters face same penalty for operating a boat under the influnce as an automobile which does help some.

Sometimes the lake reminds me of those old movies where the tin lizzies are drivings around in any directions without ryme or reason before traffic signals, center lines etc.. once in a while we go out in the evenings or a weekday and it's pretty peaceful.

I had a boat and a pool for 20 years. I became the happiest man in my neighborhood when I got rid of both. They are money pits and a good source of aggregation, as you found out this weekend.

There simple are to many people on this rock, and it's getting worse.
Courtesy and common sense are things of the past, even morals are out dated.

LOL MN has a DUI boating laws.....they consider a moterised boat to be a "motor vehicle" same penalties. But my county has 1048 lakes and 2 officers to patrol em.

I have a buddy with a place on the lake. I go fish'n with him a few times a year. We go when ever he can sneak away from work in the middle of the week. For a place that is such a mad house on the weekend seems like you have the whole place to your self on a random Tuesday.

When we were younger, we owned a camper and really enjoyed getting away for a weekend a few times each summer. It didn't take long to figure out that the only sane place to camp was at the 10HP max lakes. If you camped at the "no limit HP" lakes, you weren't gonna get any sleep. On one of our camping trips, the folks in the neighboring campsite had a skinny-dipping party, and it kept me awake all night long. . .

I never could understand the "joy" of camping out or going to a lake/river. I live over a half a mile from anyone. Why go to a place that has people every three feet and live without the niceties of life at home, like AC and a shower.

I am looking at my next career in retirement. HERMIT!!!! LOL

My kind of camping is far from what the die hards do. I have a "home on wheels" sat. dish and all. I tried that sleep on a rock and decided that was for the birds. We really enjoy boating mostly and that's why I bought the camper to cut down drive time to and from.

Now that's funny......right after I retired from the Army my wife says "we should get a tent and go camping". I'm like I just spent 20 years "going camping" in all weather conditions......why would I want to do that! My idea of ruffing in now is "Super 8"........ :p

VERY bad idea. In addition to the very real possibility of getting shot, as Hal pointed out, the penalty enhancements for display or use of a firearm (or what appears to be a firearm) are very harsh- someone could end up going away for a couple of years.

And no, the cops won't just shrug it off and say "boys will be boys."

let me be clear. We were just joking around about the paintball guns.
