Cleaning up piston rings

Years ago I had a 76 Monte Carlo That had #5 spark plug fouled with oil. The modulator valve on the transmission eventually went bad and caused the engine to suck transmission fluid through the intake manifold. It sucked so much oil that the engine gained oil in the crankcase. It took me awhile to find out what was causing the engine to smoke as bad as it did. I replaced the modulator valve.

The next time I changed spark plugs #5 plug was clean as a whistle.

What I plan on doing and if you folks with older engines think this would benefit you could do it. And if you engine men think this is a mistake let me know.

On an engine I have there are pipe taping's on the intake manifold. I was going to plum in a line with transmission oil and a valve so the flow could be regulated. Start the engine on gas then open the valve until the engine smokes pretty good. Run it that way for several times and hope it cleans any sticking piston rings, oil or compression.

What do you think is this foolish or will it do some good?

I've got a easier idea and it really works.

Mix ONE quart of dextron in a FULL tank of fuel. Take 'er down the interstate for 20 minutes.

No smoke and it cleans 'em right up.

OR,

Run a bottle of GM's top engine cleaner thru the carb, kill it and let it set over night. Next day it's gonna smoke like a Kansas City hooker for a little while, but it does do the trick.

When I was a kid I lived in town and 2 mile trips for us locals was a journey. Result, you guessed it and most of it was before high detergent oil.

We would get a can of Casite CD2, about a pint as I recall, and pour it down the carb a little at a time till the engine started to stall, quit pouring, room room room the engine a few times till it got it's breath and did it again till we got to the last of the can. Then down the hatch till we killed it. Let it sit for about an hour, crank her up, smoke out all the mosquitoes in the "hood", get the exhaust cleaned up and replace the spark plugs. Worked for us.

My uncles tapped a line into the exhaust manifold of an old car. Ran a line into the car and with a manual fuel pump and a can of "sheep dip" would roar up and down the gravel roads making a smoke screen. Neighbors all thanked them for killing all the "skeeters" :0)

Reasearch Marvel Mystery Oil and their top oiling kit. Marvel is one of the oldest & finest product you can find. Their kit metered the additve into the engine intake system. It was the answer for trucks ,tractors, LP & aircooled engines.

Why not just do it the simple way and stop over thinking things. Just put a 1/2 qt in the oil when you change oil and the other 1/2 into the fuel tank and be done with it. I have said many times over the years to use ATF to clean up engines and free up sticking rings and valves

We Worked out equipment to the Limit, day and Night...about twice a year, Dad would warm each engine up and while at about 1/2 throttle, Pump a FULL squirtcan of engine oil into the Carburetor..just as FAST as it could take it and not quit...
If there is no "O2 sensor", it will not hurt a thing...!!!

One of the more bizarre things I have seen is having an automobile engine up to FULL HOT Operating Temp, High Idle and Pour a full glass of Water down the Carb..!!
Supposed to remove the Carbon..didn't seem to hurt a durned thing...!!

Reminds me of the fellow who asked lady if she smoked after sxx, she replied "I never looked to see".

Agree!

When I used to turn wrenches for money.. back in the stone ages used a GM product called carbon-x.

I think this is what you describe. take the air cleaner off, pour product down carb throat stalling the engine then after an hour or so take vehicle out and run it hard for a half hour or so.

Worked very well but now days carbs are rare and I don't know if the product is even available anymore.

old I will give your method a try, this engine I am fooling with is a V4 Wisconsin. 1/2 quart of ATF sounds like a bit much for 5 gallons.

Allen, your idea is similar to old's and this engine is a stationary power unit so the freeway thing is not an option. I will add Dextron ATF to the gas and hopefully it cleans up the engine. Thanks

Shoot that is half what I normally do in an engine to clean it up. Most of the time I say to use 1qt to 5 gal of gas but you where talking about a car so figured that was what you where messing with. I have even mixed it 1qt to 3 gal if the engine has bad problems with sticking rings and or valves
