Trailer wheels

I havae a 16 ft Zieman tilt bed equipment hauling trailer. I have never used it so was thinking about selling it. I had someone looking at it, he told me the wheels that are on it are against the law to use now. They don't have a center, and are held on by lugs against the hub, and rim, and held in place by the nut. He said he will need to replact the axles and offered me 600.00. It does need tires, and a bed. Any thoughts? Stan

I'd check withg your local DOT first. I think it's just the tires that are the issue and if it needs new ones anyway may noty be a problem. $600 is pretty cheap for a tilt bed trailer.

sell with a bill-of-sale that states as-is,,tell them they can do anything they like to do after they take it home.... if you aren't loosing a lot of money on the sale, and don't want to spend money to fix it up,[which after you would probably want to keep then],,bye-by trailer, hello cash,, my opinion

I have a trailer with those kind of axles. Use it a lot. Three ton is all I try to carry, but have had four ton on it. Have bought new tires for it. Made many 200 mile (one way) trips hauling tractors. Got four more axles/Wheels I will make something out of them some day.

He is just BSing you to get the price down. There are several factory trailers that use that type of lug/rim combination. You just have to run regular high way trailer tires not house trailer tires.

A friend has a heavy dualed tandem backhoe trailer and it has those type of rims and tires. He has to go across the WI DOT scale everyday to go to Dubuque to where he usually works with his equipment. He never has had any type of problem with the DOT.

The guy is just trying to beat/cheat you down on the price. I would ask him more than the first price if he comes back. I dislike cheats!!!

(quoted from post at 03:02:16 06/16/12) Not legal to build one with that type of wheel in PA. don't know about one already buit.

I'd like to see the statute on that. That wheel is no different in design than any heavy truck with Dayton wheels. I would bet the statute says that mobile home tires on those wheels are only legal when used under a mobile home. Tires will say for mobile home use only on the sidewall. I believe this is a federal regulation also.

there might be a rule on those in some easters states, but i think this is a case of him either trying to get the trailer for much less, or he;s repeating what his cousine's uncles dad told him one time, here the way i see this issue, i have 2 trailers with these axles, both have been around since moses was here but what we did to them, was replace the wheel bearings with quality bearings and seals then replace the tires stamped 'for mobile home use' with tires stamped 'for lowboy use' these tires are heavier, and much better quality i think where some states are ruling on this is that the mobilt home tires are a cheap light duty tire designed basicly to transport the home 1 or 2 times in its life, they are prone to blow out, especially if run underinflated, this can lead to an accident if the trailer using them is being pulled by somebody who is not used to handeling trailers, the longest trip i have used my 3 axle trailer for is a 1,000 mile trip to deliver a pickup truck, the pickup weighed app 4500 lbs the trip was in july, hot as hades, the trailer tires were inflated to 65psi, we used the ratcheting type binders and chain to secure the truck on the trailer, which is a home made unit and heavy as heck, we had no problems with either the trailer or truck during the entire trip, neither did the law bother us when they looked us over passing thru towns or on the road, we did not stop at ports of entry as this trip was not for hire, just family business, i dont see any issues with these axle equiped trailers, as long as they have the upgraded tires on them

Those 2 piece "dayton style" wheels are used on just about every lowboy, equipment tag trailer, older logging truck/trailer, etc. Just use the propert DOT rated tires and your all set.
