Stopped by grocery on the way home yesterday. I stopped to compare meat prices to the store I normally frequent. Steaks were much cheaper looked closer and they had product of Mexico on the price sticker.Good thing or bad?

The problem is if we put trade restrictions on Mexican beef, Mexico will put trade restrictions on American wheat. If we can't sell our wheat, NOBODY is buying ANYBODY'S beef, period.

Unfortunately, people will literally eat the Mexican beef up because it's cheaper. They don't care where it comes from as long as it costs less.

May as well enjoy the cost savings yourself if the product is any good. What few of us that'll refuse to buy it for "patriotic" reasons won't make a hill of beans difference in the marketplace.

All you can hope for is a few well-publicized deaths from contaminated meat, or mad cow disease, to scare people off it.

Just more jobs shipped south because of NAFTA. Go ahead and buy it. You are just helping put a few more American jobs south of the border.

Same way with the China made stuff. For every dollar you save buying it you are selling our standard of living out.

You seem to forget, your American businessmen are responsible for a lot of that production in China because of the low labour costs.
Did you also notice that Indonesia is now the preferred location for production of motor vehicles. Check out Gm and Ford's intentions.
When things get too expensive there, they will shift to Timbukto.

Some of us have no choice. When you live on S/S and disability you live as cheap as you can. I haven't had beef in a long time. Even hamburger meat is getting more than I can afford. 7.85 for two pounds last time I checked.

Heard on the news this morning that 41% of other countries think China has passed the US as the world"s leading economy.

You don't have to explain anything to anyone... Most of these "be American, buy American" folks are the ones that populate walmart after midnight or drive to the one a couple towns over so noone knows them......

chicken and turkey's better for ya anyway....

Haven't heard anything new in the last couple weeks, but Canada and Mexico had started a lawsuit to stop the Country Of Origin Label law. Personally, I'd like to see -more- food labeled as to where it comes from. (not saying imported food is bad, -some things we just don't grow here- but I have more trust in U.S. grown food)

To answer your question honestly, and truthfully, much of the world considers American beef second rate! As an example, note chinas recent ban on american beef. nothing wrong with mexican beef whatsoever. Whether you realize it or not youve been eating it for years. Right along with produce. Of course theres the little issue of the american cattle grower, but if imports were to stop tommorrow, you and i couldnt afford to buy beef at all unless we raised our own. Simply due to the fact american cattle stocks are lower than in the last hundred years or so.

as I said before, imports of beef from Mexico is nothing new and it has been going on since the west was first settled. In fact it may surprise some folks to know its harder to find a fast food chain using american beef than it is to find one who doesnt. What is new is the labeling of beef and produce as being from mexico. why now? simple, its a marketing ploy. And a VERY GOOD ONE!!The same belief that makes some folks here say they wont buy it,means those of spanish and mexican descent WILL! not to metion those folks in MOST of the world who consider the US to be the "great evil". lets face it guys and gals, the world is wising up,govs that have held folks under their thumbs are falling right and left and people are demanding their share of the pie..sad thing is they also remember the supporters of those who oppressed them for so long.and with their new found freedoms comes the chance to become equals with them. power in the global markets are changing every day.

We try to buy US made, if we can't we then try to stay North American (Canada/Mexico). food or otherwise.

I do NOT understand why any food or food product is imported from china. They can't feed themselves, why ship it back (I actually know the answer). Plus the fact i doubt if they'd pass any FDA regulations.

Its just the same here, being Canadian, we much prefer buying canadian beef but its hard to find out unless you buy from a local butcher shop. I always thought it was the free trade agreement that prevented them from labelling Canadian beef here.

Country of origin labeling (COOL) -- The USA imports very little boxed beef from Mexico, a good number of stocker cattle are imported and fed in the US, the beef from those calves when slaughtered has to be labeled ''Product of Mexico and the US'' Mexico imports about 1/3 of the boxed beef shipped from the USA. 90% of US beef is consumed in the US, the cow heard is at a 60 year low but the beef supply is only off 5% or so from 5 years ago due to the increased slaughter weights. Any meat imports to the US have to come from processing plants with the same standards as USDA inspected plants in the US.

Must be they are exporting the "good stuff", because the last time I was on the Yucatan in Mexico the best beef I had was in McDonalds.

Funny story, I was in Costco a while back with my Mexican friends (daughter and mother) we were looking at some nice strawberries. This old codger came an said with disgust "grown in Mexico" the mother picked up the box and read real load " product of California" the old guy sure left in A hurry as we all started laughing.
Sometimes it just pays to keep your mouth shut.

started buying all beef from a local small store who does all his own butchering.
now get the same tasting beef I got back when I worked for my uncle Carl and got paid in beef.
No need to go to Meijers' Giant Eagle, Krogers etc anymore and get meat I don't like the flavor of

They've been importing beef from Mexico and Argentina for a long time IIRC. People just weren't generally aware of it. The labeling now lets you know.

Flying in and out of Torreon, Mex, there's a lot of HUGE feedlots.

How much will it cost the US economy in the long run if we let just ONE case of Mad Cow disease in from Mexico?? Me, eat beef from Mexico, no thanks. Tom

If you go to places like Burger King or Taco Bell, you are probably eating imported beef. I don't know about Wendy's or McD's.
