Grandpa's H needs new shoes

I am restoring a Farmall H that my grandfather bought new in 1942. It needs tires badly, got the tube stickin' thru one of them. I don't care much about the tread, just good solid tires. I haven't had any luck finding good used ones, so I'm thinking about buying new. Of course I want to keep the cost down as it won't beused for anything but shows and parades. I was wondering what kind of experience any of you had with some of the "lesser known" brands and sources. Thanks,
Paul

I know a guy over by Crystal that has a near new pair of 13.6x38s all mounted up on IH rims, but he wants $1000 for the pair rims and all. New tires alone are $750 each.

Miller Tire quoted me somewhere (can"t remember exactly)under $500.00 each for 12.4 X 38 and there is no shipping if you pick them up at a tractor show they will attend. Also had good luck with Tucker Tire out of TN. LOL. Tires are expensive now days!

The sad part is that right now your H is worth about the price of 4 new tires. And when you are done installing them it'll be worth about the price of 4 new tires.
My buddy and I just joined forces and bought two pairs of 16.9X30s made by Samson (China) Who knows how they will hold up. With tax etc they were $920/pair.

I have a decent set of tires on rims that I want to get rid of, CHEAP. I am in Iron Mountain (the UP)

I got some China 16.9X30 rears on my new Farmall and after putting 138 hours on the planter and cultivator this spring though the bars are wearing good, the rubber between them is all chewed up as if I ran them on bean stubble for ten years.

I did a commercial insurance inspection on a tire wholesaler last winter.

In walking through his warehouse, he pointed out a particular Goodyear 18.4x38 radial tractor tire. He said a year ago he was selling them for $800 per, now it's $1800.

How far are you from Bay City, or more specifically, Bad Axe? Marty2374 on eBay, destroys about 5-6 tractors a week. It shouldn't take long for you to bid on the size you want. I think his tires w/rims usually close at $100-$150 each.

I put an Alliance brnd rear tire on my 48 H and have been very pleased with it. IIRC it cost me about 300 bucks but that was a few years ago. Good tires though and lower price range. Kippster

I wish I could use them. With 12.4's on, wheels all the way in with the dish out I have about 1-1/2" total clearance to get it on my trailer, so I just can't use them very well. Thanks for thinking about me.

Just bought some 11.2 X 38 Titan rears. Normally $430 each, the local Coop felt sorry for me (or bent me over, not sure which) and sold them for $380 each. For what its worth, they are American made.

Good luck to you. We"ve been looking for new (used) tires for our JD MT and one of the 70"s for months now. Local tire place quoted $750 each for new.

I put a pair of 13.6x38 Akuret tires on my M several years ago. They had the best price and best warranty I could find. More recently I needed a pair of 12.4x38 for an H, and asked for Akurets, but they are not available in that size, so I went with Titans. My tractors do work, but not very often. So far, I am more than happy with both the Titans and the Akurets.
