Scored a Farmall factory original mud scraper

Awesome day Saturday!!! We made a junkyard run to buy a valve cover for our old Regular - we had seen it there last fall but did not buy it at the time since we already had one good one. But my husband decided to go back and buy it because it has a nice decal remnant for "Rusty" (our old Regular that we will never repaint).

Husband took some tools as he planned to get wheel bearings and seals... but did NOT bring his 3/4" drive socket set since he was not planning to get anything real big. But when he moved the tall grass to get at the front hub, he said "Well look at this would ya? This old girl has an original Farmall factory mudscraper! I'm taking this baby home today, if I have to drag the tractor behind the van." We could not believe it, but yep - we found one of those babies. It does not have the "hoods" on it - you can see where the hood rivets sheared off (but maybe we will run across a set someday). This mud scraper is not really "purdy" compared to other designs - but she's original and that is pretty cool to us.

The funniest thing is that we had traveled to this junkyard 3 times last fall - but never noticed the mud scraper.

We paid $50 bucks for everything: mud scraper, valve cover, front axel, and all the bearings, and felt seals for the front end. [He is planning to get the Regular running as his winter project this year.]

We had our 13 year old daughter along for this trip - so she and I just explored the playground...I mean junkyard, and talked. I took a lot more junkyard art photos. Then on the trip home we stopped for a burger at our favorite place. It was a really fun day!

Thanks!

Yes, we both agree - the time spent with our daughter is precious. She will be grown and gone before we know it. As John T has posted about a Paul Anka song - these truly are the "Times of Our Lives"... and from that song, "Memories are moments that you borrow, to spend when you get to tomorrow".

Husband and I are looking very much forward to having the old Regular running. It is the only tractor that is "ours"...as finding it and all the needed parts has been a joint venture (and a fun one at that). All our other tractors are really his - he had them before we met or purchased them for farm work.

Post some more pics! Please.Glad you got to send the time with your daughter-Priceless!She will remember that day forever...

You sound like my kinda gal- go to the junkyard with hubby, and take the teenage daughter! And she even went! Doesn't get any better than that.

Mrs. and I were cruising through central Alabama- I saw a sign for "Mid South Tractor Parts", and read it aloud. Didn't turn, and wifey says "Well, aren't you gonna go take a look?" I sorta waffled, and she said, "No, you should go- its your vacation too- you'll have fun."

And I did- nice day for the south (mid-80's and raining lightly), and I found some Oliver guages and some other treasures. Four very friendly guys at the counter, gave me the tools I needed. Found it interesting that the only guys actually working were the 2 Mexicans parting out a tractor in the shop.

Delta Red,

Yes, I'll post a few and put them to your attention. Will take me a bit to sort out a few from various junkyards and auctions (and I'll probably watermark them - though try to be unobtrusive with it - as I may someday try to sell some prints on ebay or something).

Yes, it was neat with our daughter. Reminds me of the Trace Adkins song where he says, "She thinks we're just fishin"...

Husband and I have had a ton of fun together over the past year... find the tractor, bringing her home and getting parts. Now he will have his work cut out for him this winter.

Glad you and your wife enjoy doing things like that together. Makes every day "more better". Neat that you found some treasures too.

As you said, it's doing things together that makes it a treasure. My wife always enjoyed picking up parts when I was working on one of our vehicles.
When I was working at an auto dealership, we were allowed to work on our own vehicles after hours. One night my younger daughter had her Mustang in the shop and was installing new brake pads. The boss walked through, stopped and watched her for a minute, and when he walked off I heard him mumble under his breath, "well,Ibedam!"
My eldest daughter majored in business, but married a guy with a few acres and learned to handle machinery quite well. When he decided to take a hike, she ended up with the place and bought her own tractor and equipment and maintains it very well. Occasionally I will answer the phone and hear, Dadeee, I need a little help! But she's gettin' there.

ShadetreeRet,
Neat that you and your wife worked as a team and enjoyed it. Also neat that your daughters are independent people. Me - not sure I'd have enough moxy or energy to stay on the farm if I didn't have my better half to share it with. And if I didn't have him, going in the shop would just make me sad...that is really his world, I'm just privileged to be part of it and hand him a tool or hold a tape measure on occasion.
