Need to do some welding on a loader on a 1998 agco 8510 tractor. If battery cables are disconnected is it safe to weld on the loader mounted to the tractor? Dont want to fry the computer, Thanks for any information.

Yes, disconnect the batteries and also I would connect the ground for the welder as close as possible to where you are welding.
I fried the ECM on an N14 once by having the ground to far away and I did have the batteries disconnected.

Keep the ground as close to the work area as possible... and don't run it through pins, bearings or other joints. Keep it on clean steel in the immediate area. That applies wether you unhook the battery cables or not. Personally I would not unhook the computer. Unhooking some of those harness connections can be asking for more trouble than you're bargaining for...
The critical thing is that you do not provide any potential welding current path through the tractor's electrical system that could possibly overload the circuits/computer.

If you can remove the loader easy I would do that. I wouldn't take any chances with the computer. Computer problems may not show up right away.

I have heard you should leave the battery hooked up because that prevents the possibility of stray current which the battery will prevent because of its higher capacity. We weld with the 2004 well drilling rig running. No problems yet.
