O/T Briggs Stratton Question

I have a Vanguard BS 14hp Engine on my zero turn woods mower. I've had it 10 years, bought it used. It now has a little over 600 hours on it and just started smoking real bad this spring. I have 2 acres to cut and it consumes almost one quart of oil every cutting of the two acres. I wanted to ask, are these engines worth rebuilding?
Thanks for any advice. I just know there are many mechanics on this sight that may have been thru a few of these engines.

If any small engine is worth rebuilding then a vanguard is. Check the price of a new one to be sure. I know on my 16 horse vanguard, the rocker arms are no longer available new and are an effort to find used.

Either the PCV valve is bad or it ha blown a head gasket either one or both will cause it. Very common problem on the valve in head B/S engines

I appreciate the input from all of you. I will check the PCV and compression to see if I have a bad head gasket.
