Will a ground rod work inside my barn? I have it close to the breaker box but was told it should be outside of the barn to get a good ground. Thanks to any that respond

Guess it depends on what the soil conditions are below the rod. Outside in moist soil would be preferred. What are you going into inside - moist soil, or dry?

I"m almost certain that code requires it to be outside. I believe the issue is that "inside dirt" will be too dry, and dry soil does not provide a good ground.

I had a fencer and ground under my barn. The ground was probably wetter under the barn than nearby outside. The ground measured out very well.

At least two 10ft long ground rods , at least 10ft apart. Connected with #6 or larger bare copper for a 100amp service.Located outside the building and protected from damag.

Its quite dry inside the barn. Guess i will change it right away. Been this way for many years but I just was told the same thing you guys told me. Thanks a lot for the help

Many factors come into play on this. Ya it is better to have it out side but if the water table is say 2 foot down and you have a 10 foot rod in the ground it will be just fine but if the water table is at 15 foot and you have a 5 foot rod then your in trouble. So as I said many many factors in this

Im not up on the latest code and besides its NOT what myslef or anyone here says that matters SEE WHAT YOUR LOCAL GOVERNING AUTHORITY (if any exists) OR YOUR UTILITY PROVIDER SAYS.

That being said, Id drive the ground rod outside and the authority or utility may require but one rod,,,,,they may test it and perhaps require a second rod,,,,,,,,they may require two rods to begin with, which I doubt ASK THEM AND DO WHAT THEY SAY NOTTTTTTTTTTT ANYONE HERE
